Medications for ADHD

Many medications have been approved for use in the treatment of ADHD. Stimulant medications, such as Ritalin, Adderal, and Dexadrine, are have proven highly effective in treating ADHD. For many children, stimulants will decrease impulsiveness and hyperactivity and improve their ability to concentrate. Stimulant medication comes in both long acting and short acting forms.

Not all children will respond well to stimulant medications. Side effects such as insomnia and weight loss may occur. Strattera, a non-stimulant medication, has also been approved for the treatment of ADHD. Strattera takes up to six weeks to take effect. There is no one single medication that will work for every child. Your doctor will work with you to determine the right medication for your child.
