How to Make Cake Decorating Clay

Cake decorating clay, what the cake decorators call fondant, is so easy to make.  It is perfect for making kids’ birthday cakes and cupcakes.  Since it is the consistency of playdough and it is edible, if you bake with the kids they can get in on the decorating action.

To make cake decorating clay you need:

  • One cup of light corn syrup
  • One cup of Crisco
  • A half teaspoon of salt
  • One teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Two pound bag of confectioners’ sugar
  • Gel food coloring

Mix the corn syrup, Crisco, salt and vanilla extract together in a mixing bowl.  Then gradually stir in the confectioners’ sugar.  Then start kneading the dough until it is the consistency of playdough.  Add food coloring once the dough is formed.  If you find that it doesn’t mold well add a little extra confectioners’ sugar to make it stiffer.

To roll the dough out, sprinkle the table with confectioners’ sugar and roll with a rolling pin.  If you have powder you can wipe with a damp paper towel when finished.

Tips:

*To make dough stick to other decorations brush with a little bit of water to make it adhere.

*For shaped decorations, place the decorations in the freezer or refrigerator right away to help them keep their shape.

*When rolling out clay to layer over a cake, roll it on a piece of wax paper or aluminum foil and then transfer to cake.  This will help it hold together and not fall apart while transferring.
