Mother’s Day Out – Vacation in Your Hometown
You drive the local streets so many times in your role as mom you could probably do it with your eyes closed (but we don’t recommend that!) –when was the last time you checked out interesting places that aren’t kid related? Look online or in the local paper, ask at the library or auto club for information about notable attractions, architecture and historical monuments in the area, and spend your day exploring. Even if you’ve lived in your hometown your entire life, you’re bound to discover something you’ve never seen or heard of before.
Mother’s Day Out – Pampering (we’re not talking diapers!)
A day at the local spa is a great thing if you can afford it, but don’t let high prices intimidate you if you can’t. Get together with a few friends and see if you can negotiate a package deal for the group. Many places these days are willing to bargain to keep customers happy. Find out if any small local salons offer additional services, which might be less expensive, or look around for a beauty school in the area where students need willing practice subjects.
Mother’s Day Out – Lights, Camera, Action
When was the last time you went to a movie that didn’t featured talking animals and robots or exploding buildings? It’s fun to watch movies at home on DVDs, but there’s something special about sitting in a dark movie theatre with a big box of popcorn and getting swept away in larger-than-life sound and images. Going to the movies in the middle of the day can feel like a real guilty pleasure – matinee prices are often cheaper, which makes it an even better idea – so find that chick flick or costume drama you’ve been wanting to see, let your husband and kids stay home and do video battle in another galaxy, and sit back and enjoy the show!
Mother’s Day Out – Nature is Nurturing
Put on your walking shoes and enjoy the great outdoors. Depending on where you live (and the weather of course), a park or beach or hiking trail should be within easy driving distance. An invigorating walk is a great way to clear the mind and get in a healthy workout. If you don’t have an entire day or want to stay very local, just walk out the front door and take a long, leisurely stroll around the neighborhood. You don’t have to have a destination in mind, but be sure to keep your head up – it’s good for the posture, and it’s also a great way to notice details about your day-to-day surroundings that you’ve never seen before.
Mother’s Day Out – Female Bonding
Make a plan to spend the day with your best friend (or friends) – you don’t need a set-in-stone plan of what you’re going do, and there’s just one rule: no kids or husbands allowed! The possibilities are endless: hang out at the mall (better yet, go check out the mall in another town), get in the car and drive an hour in any direction and see where you end up, go out to lunch somewhere you’ve never been before, stay in and do an arts-and-crafts project together … you get the idea, and feel free to add one of your own!
