Truthfully, most women throughout history (and plenty even in this day and age) have gone through childbirth without any sort of organized class. And if you simply don’t have the time, money, or inclination, you will probably be just fine. But whether you’re planning on a natural childbirth or if you plan to have an epidural or other pain medication, a childbirth class can give you some important assurances ahead of time that will allow you to be more confident and relaxed throughout the process. Depending on the class, you will also get specific training on whatever birthing method you hope to use, whether it is the Lamaze or Bradley methods, or any other style of birthing.
First-time moms may find childbirth classes particularly helpful, because most classes cover such issues as how to tell you are in labor, when to call the doctor or midwife, and how your partner can help. Many classes also offer some basics in newborn care and feeding.
A second-time or even more experienced mom can also benefit from a childbirth class, especially if she wants to have a birth experience that is different from the one she had before. A childbirth class can also give experienced moms good information about what happens if you don’t make it to the hospital in time (after more than one pregnancy, your labor tends to move faster), and how to prepare a sibling for a new little brother or sister.
If you’re still on the fence, consider what else a childbirth class can do for you:
Help you get familiarized with the facility: If you take a class at the place where you will give birth, chances are you’ll be able to take a tour and see the labor and delivery rooms. You’ll probably feel more confident when you visualize your birth if you know exactly where you will be and what the room will look like.
Help you understand what happens if you need a C-section: No matter how well you plan for your birth, you might still run into an emergency in which the baby needs to be delivered quickly through a Caesarean section. A childbirth class will help you understand what is entailed and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the process.
Help you work through any other fears you might have: Some first-time moms and even veteran moms have a fear of labor, hospitals, and/or blood. Some have heard labor and delivery horror stories that have driven them to distraction. Going to a childbirth class will give you an opportunity to ask more questions about things you are afraid of, to learn new techniques for putting yourself at ease, and to see that you are not alone when you share your fears with other couples.
If you’re certain you don’t need to take a childbirth education class, you will probably be just fine. But if you’re on the fence or if you have any lingering questions, a class could be just what the doctor ordered. Remember that knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more confident – and comfortable – you will be during your childbirth experience.
