Turning 3 is Pretty Cool

Eric woke on his third birthday with no idea what was in store for him. We’d been building up for a while now so he wasn’t too surprised by the idea, telling him his birthday was coming up, reminding him all of the fun things that happen on birthdays. So, Friday, when I greeted him with a bright, “Happy birthday, Eric!!” his response shouldn’t have surprised me.

“No, Mommy, it’s my birthday SOON! I don’t have today!”

Yep yep yep. We got that straightened out, eventually, but it took all morning with us and maybe even a bit of it at school too.

Wearing his super birthday shirt, he was off to school, where much fun – and cupcakes! – awaited him. Cool chocolate cupcakes no less, with rainbow colors icing and little plastic aliens on top, cause that’s how we roll. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Mommy was hard at work. Or maybe it would be better to say she wasn’t hard at work, because she was sneaking home to bake cake and prepare a surprise for Eric to walk in on!

By the time he was picked up from school, the idea of a birthday had settled in quite nicely for him. Why not? It was obviously a very cool thing! Though his teacher says when they sang Happy Birthday to him, he covered his ears and ducked away.

…She also says she doesn’t blame him.

Coming home, of course, there was short work to be made of the presents. Acting truly his age, he blew through the presents – tear one open, deposit trash into pile, set present on floor, and open the next. There were no pauses to play with the toys he’d opened; it was his mission to get them open as quickly as possible!

At least until it was time to open the bubbles.

As he was finishing opening his presents that awaited him at home, some friends came over – perfect timing, really! Eric and his buddy Tyler had a blast playing with the new cars and trucks they’d given him, and he even shared his cake.

The day was over far too soon for him, but that didn’t mean the fun was over too! The next day, being the lovely weekend, we packed up along with Tyler and his family and went out to Grant’s Farm. We’d asked Eric specifically what he wanted to do, and he was adamant: he wanted to go to the “zoo” and see the horsies. Since there are no horses at the actual zoo, Grant’s Farm it was; they have plenty of animals on display, both in the nature preserve part you ride through and in the areas beyond to walk through and see.

Eric’s pretty sure he’ll turn 3 any day.
