Did my first Gonal-F injection

I was so upset.  Every time I do one of these injections I feel like I screw something up.  I did two last cycle before it was canceled so I thought for sure I would get it totally right this time.  I am using a Gonal-F pen.  The pen comes prefilled with 900 iu of Gonal-F.  My injections are 300 iu so all together I have done 3 -300 iu injections.  I shouldn’t have anything left in the pen (or that is what I thought).

Well I did my injection tonight and when I pulled the needle out I realized there was still a decent amount left in the pen.  So then I pulled back on the pen like an idiot to see how much was left.  I just wanted to have an idea of how much extra there was.  I accidentally squirted out what was left in it which was 75 iu.  So I think I may have shorted myself 75 iu.

I couldn’t have just injected myself with what was left though because what if I did get the whole dose in and the screw up was from earlier.  I just didn’t want to give myself too much either.  At any rate, I was feeling very stressed out.

In a panic I post on our ever useful Trying to Conceive with Medical Assistance board and pay a visit to Pharmacist Google.  What nobody told me is that there is a surplus in these pens.  I found some really useful information if anyone is visiting JM from Doctor Google.  The Gonal-F pen comes prefilled with 1026 iu.  I primed the pen the first time I used it so that accounted for 37.5 iu.  Plus, I used 900 iu so that is 937.5 all together.  The pen is filled with 1026 iu so that leaves 88.5 iu, about what I squirted out.  Here is a link to this information in case anyone is looking for this.  http://www.drugs.com/pro/gonal-f.html The information on this is under “How supplied Section.”

I am happy to say I made it through my first injection for this cycle.  I have another one tomorrow and then an ultrasound on Monday.

After reading your post, I feel for you because the nurse or doctor should have let you know that there is always extra left. I’m surprised your nurse or doctor didn’t tell you when they showed you how to use the pen. Try not to stress although I know it’s hard as I’ve gone through a few injection cycles (even now, I’m still waiting). Good luck to us both!!!!
