One Set of Rules

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by JM Guest Blogger

I try really, really hard not to have one set of rules for one of my girls and a different set for the other but sometimes it’s really hard. It’s going to be even harder when Baby #3 comes into the mix. It’s not that I play favourites or willingly give one of them more or less scope for their actions but they are very different sometimes in terms of personality and intention.

Just now I was nibbling on a biscuit. Ahh, dry biscuits are my friends right now. This is the first pregnancy I have had morning sickness with and although it had faded for a while it seems to be back now. Natasha loves my biscuits while Angelica just pretends to love them to fit in with ‘the in crowd’. I generally break a biscuit in half, then in half again and give each of them a quarter but today Natasha decided this was unacceptable and swiped a whole (more…)

Birthday Season!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by Beth

Birthday Season in our house is in full swing.  Poor Charlie, he is our outlier birthday.  Hopefully the next kid (or two) will have a birthday close to his so he doesn’t feel left out.  Of course he may like having his birthday far from everyone else as he won’t have to share a party with anyone.

Today is my birthday.  Everyone has that age where they just feel is OLD.  25 has always been that age for me, so I’m trying to come to terms with the fact that today I’m a quarter of a century old.  Yesterday Chris took me to Best Buy to buy my birthday gift.  A brand new laptop! And it’s a very nice laptop too!  Its a gaming laptop even though I’m not a gamer - so it will be able to handle everything I need it too, which is mostly web browsing, and homeschooling.  It has a built in webcam which will be really nice when Chris is deployed.  On Saturday Chris is taking me to the movies and out for lunch and dinner.

Tomorrow Charlie turns 3 months old! I can’t believe it’s already been 3 months.  He is such a happy baby - as long as he’s being held or played with.  It’s made homeschooling hard, but I figure (more…)

Stuffed Zucchini Stacks

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by Jess

It’s getting to be the time of year when my blog is filled with favorite recipes for locally and home grown produce. So if it seems like I’m posting a lot about food, it’s just because I’m in the kitchen a lot during these months!

This past weekend, Daryl went to visit some friends. I’m insanely jealous of their garden. They have the kind of garden that I dream of putting within mine and Daryl’s white picket fence someday (when we get that ever elusive white picket fence, that is!) They sent Daryl back to me carrying delicious homemade pickles, onions, and these gigantic beasts:

Yes, those my friends, are real zucchini. Just to give a comparison of the size, I (more…)

My love/hate relationship with sports

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by Valerie

I am a sports fanatic. Like, HUGE. It’s very unbelievable to many people how much I love sports and enjoy watching or playing. Correction–attempting to play. What do I love about them you ask? Let me just count the ways:

1) I love competition–it’s just exciting to watch 2 teams or 2 individuals go head to head
2) I am always in awe of the talent people can acquire or have naturally. I know many athletes are born, but I have seen a number of athletes develop and become amazing to watch. It’s fascinating
3) I enjoy the mental aspects of sports–many people don’t realize the strategy and amount of “pre-thinking” that goes into most.
4) They are just exciting to watch/play
5) I really enjoy the technical sports–gymnastics, diving….I am definitely most in awe of these types of sports.
6) I have a passion for exercise and activity so it’s just a good fit
7) There are many life lessons that are taught in sports–discipline, teamwork, healthy living, strategy….

….I could go on but this gives you a good idea. However, (more…)

What’s for dinner?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by pattyandthemoos

Today I went to Google to see if I could find some easy dinner recipes. I found some. Read them over and one by one said to myself, “yeh. Good luck getting anyone in my house to eat that.” Then I did a search for easy dinner ideas for picky eaters and what did I find? A gazillion recipes for picky kids. What makes everyone think that kids are the picky eaters? Yeh, some of my kids are picky eaters but the biggest pain in my rear isn’t my kids. It’s my hubby. And I really don’t think that badly of him because I know a lot of adult picky eaters.

Here I am though, at noon, still trying to think of something to make for dinner. I have hamburger, chicken, roast, and steaks. This is the meat I buy almost all the time. Occasionally I will buy pork chops or corned beef. I can’t make casseroles. I can’t make meat loaf. I can’t make anything unique like stir fry. I can’t even make spaghetti. Well, my kids will eat spaghetti but the big guy won’t. It gets really irritating because I am the opposite of a picky eater. I will eat just about anything. I have eaten brains, calamari, venison, ground hog, goat-something-or-other (more…)

Shots

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by MommaTrish

I had to take both Ryan and Belly in for shots this morning. Belly to get her finally started on them and Ryan to get caught up on his for school. Plus I needed to get a new copy of Ryan’s birth certificate for school also.

To start off, I got there at about 9:45, appointment was at 10. Waited for a close to 45 minutes, then they got called back for shots. When I was filling out their paperwork when I first got there I put in a request for Ryan’s birth certificate and the lady said to pick it up on my way out. Ryan did, well, ok with his shots. He fussed a little and cried some but it wasn’t too bad. At first Belly did great. The first three she took with just stiffening herself up but the last two she screamed bloody murder through. (I was informed those 2 burn a lot). All of that was finished up by about 11.

I went up to pay for Ryan’s birth certificate and pick up his official shot records and the new lady behind the counter told me (more…)

Blistering Heat

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by JM Guest Blogger

I am beginning to crumble- the heat is preventing me from going outside much. It’s almost like being stuck in the house during a blizzard. I go outside and get hit with 110 degrees plus 99% humidity and I can’t even suck in enough air to go get the mail.

I went out in the evening last night, despite it being in the upper nineties and did some shooting. It was one of those times as a photographer, where you learn by trying something differently. Lately, I’ve been using the pre-set’s on the camera as much as possible, thinking that there were shortcomings I would never be able to overcome.

I was so wrong. I flipped to fully manual on a whim, and was able to accomplish some (more…)

Soccer Camp: Wednesday

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 by by Smacksy

Bob came into our bedroom at 2:00 am ready to talk. Right then. At 2:00 am. He wanted to talk about protocol droids (How are they different than medical droids?), raspberry lemonade (How do they squeeze out the raspberries?), and his favorite 2:00 am topic, death.

“But if Meda was very old and got sick, how old (more…)

Being Someone New

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 by by JM Guest Blogger

Have you ever drastically changed your haircut or color, gotten a new and different type of outfit for yourself, worn sexy make-up when you normally don’t wear any at all, or even ridden around in a sports car when you’re usually a minivan girl?  Have you noticed how just one simple outward change can affect your entire persona?

I dealt a lot with this over the weekend.  Last week I dyed my hair super dark, and that along with showing off my new arm tattoo brought on a ton a different attention than I’m used to.  I’ve always been the sweet girl but over the weekend I got to play sexy rebel.  It was like an Angelina Jolie movie!!!

So put on those 4-inch sexy heels and head out for a girls’ night out on the town.  Go for that drastic style change you’ve been contemplating for years.  Get out of those sweats and into those (more…)
