First Day of School 2010

Everyone loves a good time, but even in the rowdiest bar, they still flicker the lights to signal that the party is o-ver.

With that, I present to you….the first day of school 2010.

This year I have a (gulp) 7th grader, a 5th grader, and a 3rd grader.  This would grieve me profoundly except that in 2 years I’ll have a (double gulp) high schooler, middle schooler, elementary schooler, a kindergartener AND a preschooler and hoo boy am I looking forward to that awesome schedule (NOT!)

Hayden leaves the earliest. His bus arrives around 7:25 a.m. This is a little painful for those of us who are NOT morning people; i.e. everyone in the house except my husband and Larissa who are in love with 6:15 a.m..
***New fall trend alert!  Smiling for a first day of school picture when you are in 7th grade is NOT cool***

“Whaaat?  I AM smiling!”

This is as close as I was allowed to get to the departing middle school bus - and only because the bus picks up right at the corner of our front yard:

“O…M..G…My mom is sooooooo lame!”

An hour later, Weston and Eliza got on the bus for elementary school.  Weston’s attitude towards school is the very definition of indifference.  Eliza, on the other hand, is such a social butterfly that being separated from her “people” all summer was like slow death.  She was bouncing to get out the door.

Just a note:  2 years, 1 inch and 1 pound separate these two.

The prolonged effort of smiling combined with having to sit in close proximity
to his sister rendered Weston incapable of sitting up straight.

Weston, exhausted from the grueling photo shoot had to sit down to wait for the bus.

Unlike the rare, mysterious, and unapproachable middle school bus, the elementary bus
welcomes all casual observers.  In fact, the children on this bus actually wave!!

“Hey guys…I’m going to spend the whole day touching all your stuff!!”

I have to admit, it was kind of hard to watch those kids leave.  There goes my free babysitting ((sniff sniff)).
But in all seriousness, as much as I love having all of the kids at home with me, we all needed a return to routine.

Ahhhh August, thy sweet name is freedo…..uh, oh yeah.  These guys.

“Hey Mom?  We are gonna OWN you….”

Kellan, although eligible for preschool, is going to skip this year.  He’s still enrolled in my awesome “School of Life“, and it’s about time that Larissa got with the program as well.  Here, they are rocking my school uniform of pajamas.  Right after this photo was taken we had a combined lesson on nutrition and economics with a little phys ed thrown in for good measure by walking straight to the donut shop.

All hail the first day of school!
