Annette Street Library Program for Children

Noah had a fantastic idea on Friday: to go to the library. It had been a while since we had visited the drop-in program there (which is run by the Macaulay Child Development Centre – http://www.macaulaycentre.org/famresource.html). In fact, I had never taken all 5 kids there. We packed a lunch and headed out, with 3 kids in the wagon, and Noah and Aidas walking. Noah and Aidas proudly wore their monkey backpacks, which also serve as leashes for when we needed to cross the road.

The five of them stuck together like glue at first. They got straight to work in the pretend kitchen. (This is one toy I do not have at the daycare, so they were using their time wisely!) It was a very busy and crowded kitchen, yet they were such angels, sharing and playing together so nicely.

Noah’s favourite game lately is ‘restaurant’, so, once in the kitchen, he promptly started up the game, asking me “Wha you wan?” Sometimes the only thing he serves at the restaurant is grilled cheese and French fries. And he usually forces me to keep on pretend eating even when I’m full, but he often refuses to take my money, so it’s not such a bad restaurant after all.
They always provide a healthy snack at some point during the program hours. Usually, after snack it is Circle Time, which usually includes a mixture of songs, rhymes and books. Most importantly though, ends with the parachute. The kids really get excited about this, and I don’t know of any other drop-in in the neighbourhood that uses a parachute. I was impressed that the kids still remembered the drill. After singing “Zoom Zoom Zoom” they immediately collapsed on the floor in anticipation of “Sleeping Bunnies”.
If you are interested in attending this drop-in program, it is located at the Annette Street Public Library (145 Annette Street – just East of Pacific Avenue, on the North side of Annette). Once you walk in the front doors of the library, you can turn right and take the stairs down to the basement (and leave your stroller/wagon in the lobby) or turn left and push the button for assistance with the elevator.
