Just Another Dream Shattered….

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 by by meanboys

My grandmother always filled her home with the smells of something home-made and amazing; cardamom rolls, Cornish pasties, cherry pies, fruit soup, Norwegian lefse.  She passed these talents on to my father, who baked cookies, pulled taffy, made us Sunday morning pancakes, and taught me to make cream puffs.  I was genetically designed to bake.  When I began having children, I harbored maternal illusions of gifting my children with the same lovely memories of sweet smells in the kitchen, especially at breakfast time.

Yesterday, I woke up early and headed downstairs to make a huuuuge batch of these babies.  From scratch.

Baked with love…and the energy generated by several cups of coffee.
What did my children choose to eat instead?

Green Tip Tuesday - Holidays are Coming

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 by by Cinella @ The Mommy Blog

So, this week we’ve been cleaning! Holidays are coming up, and one of my pet peeves is that darn cleaning smell! I hate that chemical smell, and I just hate it when I walk into someones house and smell Clorox or other cleaning products.

We clean with soap and water. My girls are actually cleaning the windows right now with just a damp face towel, and my 7 year old has a bit of soap in it. We clean the floors with a steam mop with warm water and vinegar, which we can add tea tree oil or some lemon for a fresh scent instead of the chemical smell.

So if you need to do some cleaning this week just use soap and water!

And enjoy the upcoming holidays!

Strategies to Help Your Child Talk: Modeling and Requiring Language

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 by by JM Guest Blogger

Today, some more strategies to help your child to talk!

Model the language you want him to use: This may seem like a no brainer, but modeling the language you want your child to use doesn’t always come naturally (and remember, that’s ok!). I remember when my daughter was a toddler, and she would walk up to me and put her arms up while grunting. Yes, she obviously was communicating to me that she wanted up. However, is this how I wanted her to communicate this to me? Not really. I wanted her to say “up,” and then eventually “up please,” and then at some point “Can you pick me up please?” But how would my daughter know to use the word “up” rather than just gesturing and grunting? I had to model it for her.

So, for a couple weeks every time she did her arms-up-and-grunt, I would look down at her and say “You want up? UP. UP. UP.” Then I would pick her up. This went on for a while until, one day, she attempted to say up! When she said the “uuuu” rather than her grunt, I got really excited, repeated “Yes, UP UP UP!” and picked her right up! I praised and praised her and continued to model, until one day she just started saying it all by herself. My son is 10 months old, and he has started the arms-up-while-grunting, so I have already started to model “UP UP UP” before I pick him up. I do not expect him to say it yet, but soon he will, because I am modeling it often.

PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE!! Once your child starts to attempt to say the words you are modeling for him, it is time to PRAISE him for his efforts! Not only do you want to give him the item he is wanting immediately to reinforce this behavior, you also want to praise him like crazy! Use big smiles, wide eyes, high pitched voice, and say “Yes! UP! You said up! GREAT JOB!” We want to praise his attempts even if they are not perfect. (more…)

Fall Leaves Using Black Glue

Monday, November 21st, 2011 by by Vicky
Around Halloween time, I saw the coolest project on Madtown Macs.  They used black glue to create some spooky Halloween pictures.  We never had time to make those pictures, but with Fall upon us, we made some leaves using the same arts and crafts technique.
Supplies you will need:
  • Black paint
  • White glue in a glue bottle
  • Paper (I used copy paper)
  • Watercolors and brush
  • Construction paper

To make your black glue, just squirt some black paint into your glue bottle.  I wanted to be sure to have a dark black color, so I emptied out most of the white glue from the bottle until there was only 1/4 left.  Then I added some squirts of black paint and shook it up. (more…)

Decisions with extra dimensions

Monday, November 21st, 2011 by by JM Guest Blogger

Every decision I make has to be carefully weighed up against Daniel’s autism.

The biggie at the moment is whether or not to try for a baby with my new partner before it is too late - given that I’m 36 now! There are health issues to consider, as well as I have IBS medication I would have to stop taking.

I think Daniel would be ok with it; I spoke to him briefly about a baby brother or sister in the car today, and he seemed quite amenable, though thoughtful, about it.

Even into the future, I feel like decisions are looming over me such as what to do about high school if he isn’t going to cope at that point. As I’m a teacher, homeschooling may be an option, though I would worry about attempting to teach high school maths and science! Even though I haven’t had another baby yet, I can’t help thinking about the fact that Daniel must be provided for with some sort of care plan, residence, and/or job - whatever he is capable of at that point in the future - before Shaun and I are not here anymore, because I wouldn’t want the responsibility falling on an unsuspecting sibling with a right to a life of their own.

And of course, there is always the worry that if I have another child, that child too might suffer from autism or asperger’s. It’s also completely likely that they won’t. Many doctors have said it’s usually genetic, and only half of Daniel’s genes (my side) would affect another baby, as it wouldn’t be with the same partner. However, I cannot trace autism in my family other than Daniel, and besides, I think it’s quite likely his delays and behaviors could have been caused when he suffered lack of oxygen to the brain at birth due to a collapsed lung. But the worry is always there.

Still, I suppose it pays to be prepared, and then whatever goes better than expected is a bonus!

This week, I am Thankful for….

Saturday, November 19th, 2011 by by Valerie

This week, I am thankful for everyday heroes - those people that serve our communities day in and day out, risking their lives to help others. These are jobs that scare me to death, and although I would be so worried about my boys if they pursued one of them, I would be so very proud as well. Obviously, I am talking about police officers, firefighters, and EMTs/Paramedics.

My boys are obsessed with these professions, and we have a full emergency garage at our house. It’s full of fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, rescue helicopters, and anything else the boys feel should be available to serve in any emergency (4 wheelers, tow trucks, “rescue” motorcycles….). We have played “911. What’s your emergency?” a number of times, and the boys have saved people from accidents, burning homes, and hazmat situations. They have rescued animals from burning barns or from people trying to steal them. Troy has given numerous talks on fire safety to children, and he has a full staff of “fire kids” trained to help him. Oh, and we can’t forget that Buffy was the “fire dog” when she was with us. Plus, I cannot tell you the number of tickets they have issued for traffic violations. As you can see, the boys take their job as hero very seriously and are the first to notice any vehicle with sirens. They must analyze what they could possibly be dealing with, where they are going, and such each time we see one.

We are also very lucky to have so many friends and family that work in such professions, so this thrills the boys and their eyes light up when we say, “Did you know that so and so is a firefighter (or police officer or EMT)?” It’s such a look of admiration that it warms my heart. It helps also that everyone we meet is so eager to talk with the boys, show them around the equipment, or let them help in some way! These people are truly heroes in our eyes!

And to show the love my boys have, here are some pics. You will notice there is a favorite though… (more…)

Reflections…

Friday, November 18th, 2011 by by Gaby&Emmy'sMama

October and November have been hard months for me for the past 10 years.  November 2nd, 2001, was the date that I said goodbye to my first angel, and then strangely enough two of my three other losses occurred between October 21 and November 19… So in the space of less than a month, I have three angelversaries.  Zhavier’s anniversary is October 21st (2007), Jayden’s is November 2nd (2001), and then Micah’s is November 19th (2005).  Of all the days they could fall on, I still don’t really understand how they all managed to fall so closely together.  The anniversary of my fourth and final angel is January 6th (2008) - so still relatively close.

I do consider myself healed from my losses. I still think about my four angels, but usually it is just a quick thought here and there, that  I forget about a few minutes later… But the past few weeks, my babies have all been constantly on my mind. I’m used to feeling this way at this time of year though.  I find it hard not to think, and I guess that is understandable…  It’s hard to not think about what life was like then and now, hard not to remember going through each individual loss.

Certain sights and smells make me think of my losses, silly things. (more…)

Food Fun Friday - Fall Scene

Friday, November 18th, 2011 by by Vicky

I was totally inspired to create this plate from a meal I saw on Pinterest from Meet the Dubiens.  I have added my own touches based on what I had available and what I know my kids will eat.  For instance, the house in the inspiration is a chicken sandwich.  In my wildest dreams, my kids would eat a chicken sandwich.  In real life, not so much.  So I made some substitutions.  Use whatever you have around you to build off your inspiration.

Lets start with the house.  I used wheat bread with the crusts cut off.  I cut the bread to look like a house and used the crusts as a roof and chimney.  I found a cool cinnamon sugar spread by Land O Lakes while I was shopping yesterday.  I love cinnamon sugar, as you might recall, and so I could not pass this up.  I spread it on my bread house, and I think it gives it a nice color.  The bread might look toasted, but that is just the spread.

I used fruit leather for the small window and door.  Since it is Fall, the fireplace is on at the house, and there is marshmallow smoke coming out of the chimney.  Lastly, I added a sun to our Fall scene.  I made this using a cookie cutter and a slice of American cheese.

My picky girls love fruit, so I wanted to make sure there was plenty on the plate.  I cut these giant grapes I got at Target to make the grass and used a medley of fruit for the leaves on the tree.  The tree is made of a pretzel rod and cut plums, apples, and clementines.

This plate can morph with the seasons, you just need to change up the tree.  So Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall…I hope your kids will eat it all.  Mine, of course, did not.
