Your Winter Wardrobe with a Splash of Color

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 by by Inspired by Family

I love that March is around the corner! Mother Nature is awaiting to splash our world with color as the first buds of green appear, giving us a glimpse of hope for warmth.  Usually, by the end of February, I get so tired of my dark and dull wardrobe.  I am ready to embrace some sunshine, literally and figuratively.  Don’t you love that giddy feeling you get when you walk into the department and the displays are decked out for Spring?

Since Winter is still lingering around, here is a fun way to color this season:

  • Add a pop of color with your accessories: jewelry, hand bag, nail polish, belt, scarf.
  • A perky cardigan.
  • It may be too early for sandals, but some fun springy flats will energize your wardrobe.
  • A crisp white shirt with ruffles.
  • Springy sleeveless top with a cardigan over it to keep you warm.
  • A light flirty skirt to go with your wintery top.

Come away with me as we dream of Spring! (more…)

Food Prep Basics

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 by by JM Guest Blogger

Do you prep your foods when you bring them home from the grocery story?

I started it a few months ago, and it makes everything so much easier.

While I do enjoy cooking, I do like things to be quickly accessible especially when packing snacks for outings.

Some things I do:

Wash apples for easy grab and eat.

Wash grapes and store in bowl or ziplock bag.  (more…)

Green Tip Tuesday - Ready for Spring

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012 by by Cinella @ The Mommy Blog

Guess what?! Spring Start on March 20th! ((A day after my 3 year old turns 3)) I love spring… not to hot, not to cold here in Texas. Almost every year I have made a onesie dress for my girls. Well, for the Vetty it’s just a T-Shirt dress. It is super easy to do. I think I will have my 7 year old help me this year. Last year my sewing machine broke, but it is still totally doable to sew by hand.

Have you ever made one? What is your favorite embellishment for your dress? Do you need directions? Check out Barefood in the Kitchen for some super easy directions/suggestions.

Check out the super cutes ones below, I did not make them (just some of my fav bloggers projects).
Hope you can make a few for spring and enjoy the great weather!

I’m All Out Of Spoons

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012 by by JM Guest Blogger

Today, I am all out of spoons. And it is only 1:30pm.

Christine Miserandino, a woman living with Lupus, came up with The Spoon Theory. In an effort to explain to a friend of hers what it is like to live with a chronic and invisible illness, she used a handful of spoons to represent all the units of energy she has to use each day. She gives her friend a handful of spoons and explains that a typical healthy person wakes up with unlimited spoons for the day to do all the daily activities he or she pleases. A healthy person doesn’t have to think about his/her spoons. A person who suffers from chronic illness? They do not wake up with unlimited spoons.

So she has her friend start to tell her all the little things she does from the time she wakes up in the morning (opening your eyes, turning an alarm off, getting up out of bed, going to the bathroom), and as her friend explains each step, she takes away one of her spoons. Soon, her friend is left with only a couple spoons, and she had barely gotten through a simple morning routine! You see, those with chronic illness wake up with only so many spoons, and they need to be careful not to use all their spoons up too quickly, because once you are out of spoons, you don’t have any left.

In many ways, I think most everyone can relate to The Spoon Theory once in a while. Think about when you have the flu. And you have to pee, AND you are hungry. And you lay there thinking, “If I get up to pee, will I have the energy to make myself a sandwich?”

But for those with chronic illness, they wake up with limited spoons EVERY DAY, not just when they have the flu. Many of my fellow Juvenile Arthritis Mamas share this Spoon Theory with others to explain how life can be for our kids. (more…)

One of Those Days

“Mom, I’m feeling a little off today.”

“How so?’

“I think I mean I feel weird. Is that what I mean?”

“Not feeling quite yourself?”

“Who else would I be feeling?”

37 Weeks: Making Life Interesting

Monday, February 27th, 2012 by by Kel

I keep being told by people that I am “so small,” “too small to be so close,” and variations along that line. Even my doctor has said it! And I’ll admit, while a part of me feels good about that…I know it’s a total sham. Granted, I am not an “all belly” carrier of babies; I gain it pretty much everywhere. But truthfully, I’m feeling huge! I bump into stuff all the time because I don’t give myself enough room, I can’t get comfortable, and I’ve gained 50 pounds. Yes, 50. When I tell people that, they ask me where I’ve gained it, and to be honest I have no idea. It’s pretty much everywhere!

I’m on weekly appointments now until this baby chooses to arrive – or until 41 weeks, when he’ll be forced to make an appearance either way. My doctor scoffs at the idea of my still being pregnant at that point, and I pretty much have to agree. That, of course, means that it’s less than a month before this baby shows up! I’m ready to be done, but I’m also not at all ready; to me, 37 weeks is just a little too early! I had that belief tested last week, too, when I went to get up off the couch and suddenly found my pants (and couch) soaked. Um? I was the exact same gestation as when Danny started leaking on me – 36 weeks 4 days – but this was no slow leak, it was more of a gush. Suddenly, images from TV of women (more…)

St. Patrick’s Day Shamrocks

The Younger is sick, so I haven’t been able to do much in the way of posting. I thought I’d pull out an old one from the archives to share for now :-)

I’m trying to get a jump on the next holiday!  The Oldest loves the idea of leprechauns and magic, so this is a great holiday for him.  The Youngest, of course, just enjoys doing anything crafty, so she is easy to please.

I started out by cutting green hearts out of construction paper.  I did it the easy way; fold paper in half, cut half a heart shape, then open.  I let her use the glue stick again and the glitter, and I gave her the hearts one at a time so she wasn’t overwhelmed.

She really liked the different colored glitter (gold and some white left over from Christmas), and she spent a good deal of time putting glue on the paper, dumping the glitter on, then rubbing it to see what would happen. (more…)

12 Places I Get Therapy Materials and Toys

Sunday, February 26th, 2012 by by JM Guest Blogger

When I first graduated from Graduate school and scored my first position as a Speech Pathologist (In my Clinical Fellowship Year) I was working with the severely handicapped population through a county program. I had NO therapy materials, no money (um I had JUST graduated!) and my employer was only giving me a few hundred dollars for materials.

Not only that, but I had a very diverse caseload. I had children ages 5-10 and high schoolers with various delays and disorders such as Autism, Mental Retardation, Fragile X, Down Syndrome, and emotional disturbance.

Did I mention I had no therapy materials, was broke, and was starting ASAP?

It was then that I realized that I was going to need to be one scrappy SLP.  I was going to need to make things and buy things CHEAP. This has stayed with me even when I was working at a district that provided me with a decent amount of funds each year for materials. I wanted to share (more…)

If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away…

Saturday, February 25th, 2012 by by Brittanie

We were out eating lunch today, and Erin started talking about sisters.  She told me she had one sister, and I explained to her that she actually had two, because Cora was her sister as well as Allison.  She knows about Cora, but I guess it just hasn’t registered that she’s her sister too.  Anyway, she asked if we could go visit her (which reminded me of the song at the end of this post).  I had to explain that you can’t go visit Heaven, it’s just not possible.  That made her sad, and with a little pout she said to me “I miss her, Mommy.”

Through the tears I could only answer, “I miss her, too.”  *sigh*

Eating Healthy and Couponing - Is it possible?

Saturday, February 25th, 2012 by by JM Guest Blogger

Can you eat healthy and still use coupons?

The answer is yes, of course, and here is how I do it:

1. Instead of cutting every coupon from the circulars or printing online, I only keep the ones that I will actually use including personal and household items.

2. I also contact my favorite companies so they include me on their mailing list.  They will occasionally mail you coupons.

3. Organize your coupons in a way (more…)
