The Not So Natural Mommy…..

Friday, October 26th, 2012 by by

I used to look at Moms that would make their own cleaners, cook like they actually knew what they were doing and think to myself “Ppft! Morons”…..but then I became a Mom myself and now I do all those things. Well, I used to. I slacked for a while there, became cheap because I had to, but now it’s different. Now I have to again. Lo loves taking bathes and naturally I scrubbed the shit outta that tub with bleach and other various trendy cleaners. Then she got a yeast infection and it was a bad one. We had no insurance, but her pedi was kind enough to tell me what to do without having to bring her in. They usually run their course in a week if you’re careful and keep things as natural as possible. So I went back to using apple cider vinegar and water to clean. God I forgot how awesome that stuff works. And my hands are super soft!! Can’t beat that! I found a website that lists all the wonderful things apple cider is good for. Here ya go…..enjoy!!

Going Home

Thursday, October 25th, 2012 by by

Last weekend I went to my hometown for my 30th High School Reunion. The place where I grew up is on the beach and in the woods and surrounded by apple orchards and artichoke fields. The smell of ocean and fog are buried deep in me. That place and the people I knew there are, as my friend Shannon put it, “part of my DNA.”

The night of the party had a dreamlike quality to it. People that seem to live only in my mind were standing in front of me. Friends looked like their younger selves by way of their parents. Memories came rushing of happy times and tragedies, real and imagined. There was intrigue and love lost and love found and love lost again. I felt that sting from tears while laughing and crying and a deep feeling of overwhelm. I was surprised that it was so fun and so difficult at once. It was a lot.

I have another home somewhere else now. I have my own family. And the hometown faraway place will always be home and these people I see so rarely anymore will always be family. It’s just like that.

Candy Corn Lollipops

Thursday, October 25th, 2012 by by

Here is a great way to use some of that candy corn that always seems to be lying around during and after the Halloween season. I am not a fan of candy corn myself, but my husband and kids loved these.

You will need:

  • Muffin tin
  • Cookie sheet
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Candy corn

We used a non stick muffin tin and cookie sheet. If you don’t have the non stick variety you will want to use a little cooking spray.

Arrange your candy corn in the muffin tin.  We used (more…)

Pumpkin Tie Dye Shirt

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012 by by

Today, Tracey from We-Made-That is here to share her idea for a cool pumpkin tie dyed shirt that you can make with your kids. There are lot of Halloween shirts in stores right now but I don’t buy any for my kids because I don’t want to spend a lot on a shirt they will only wear a few weeks. What I love about Tracey’s shirts is that you can use a shirt you already have at home and include your kids in the creative process. That’s a win-win in my book!

Pumpkin Tie Dye Shirt

Can you believe that I have never tie dyed a shirt before?  It was always something I wanted to do but just never got around to it.  Then I finally decided to give it a shot and was going to do a heart tie dye pattern, when I thought hey it is Halloween why not try to do a pumpkin.  I mean if you can tie dye a heart shape why not a pumpkin right?  And I have to say I really LOVE how it turned out.  And my daughter is super proud of her creation!

I did learn a few things though; the shirt above is actually (more…)

My Zombie Morning

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012 by by

I would say this zombie girl resembles me, but that would be an insult to the zombie.  For real.
I made it home from Craft Weekend.  Barely.

The event ended promptly at noon, so by 1:00 all the girls who’d flown in were all deposited at the airport.  I had a 5:00 flight so although waiting four hours in the Wichita airport didn’t sound very appealing, I had some new friends to pass time with for a bit and a new book to read, so I figured it would just be bonus quiet time.  Which it was.  Until it wasn’t.

Thanks to bad weather in Illinois, my flight was cancelled.  Except American Airlines kept that a secret.  At 4:30 I pulled my up my mobile boarding pass on my iPhone in preparation for my 5:00 flight and saw that somehow my 70 minute direct-to-Chicago flight had now turned into (more…)

Coffee Break?

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012 by by

“… and then after I have a yogurt can I get a Sponge Bob and then after that can you look at that castle I made and then help me put the stopper back in my piggy bank? It’s stuck. ”

“Babe, I just need a couple of minutes to make coffee and sit down and relax.”

“Mom, you don’t get it. There IS no rela

Halloween Cupcakes: Witch

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012 by by

In our house, tubs of frosting get eaten with a spoon (by my lean and long husband). So when we were asked to participate in the #CoolWhipFrosting Challenge I jumped on the opportunity.  I love to make things from scratch, I really do but when it comes to cakes and cupcakes I like to buy cake mixes.  Mostly because there is not a huge difference in taste, especially if you are buying the right brand and doctoring it up to your liking.  Below you will see how I doctored up some plain chocolate cake and made it, Chocolate Chip Mint and you will also find out my secret on how to decorate these adorable cupcakes in 5 minutes.

My friend Mikel, our Communications Coordinator, and me decided to take the Cool Whip challenge.  She made some yummy unbirthday cupcakes (more…)

7 Home Remedies for Colds During Pregnancy aka ode to my neti pot

Sunday, October 21st, 2012 by by

I thought that I was in the clear for illnesses and I had been feeling great lately.  All of the sudden food poisoning struck rolled together with a cold or allergy outbreak on the same day.  It is so hard to feel better when pregnant since you can’t take any of the traditional knock-out meds.  I thought up a whole list of Grandma’s Cures to help you feel better with no medication.

Chicken Soup
Who knew, but Chicken soup actually does help you feel better and it has been studied to be more then just a placebo effect. Check out this NY times article for more info. Plus it tastes even better if your mom, friend or hubby makes it and can only benefit your little bun in the oven.

Neti Pot
A neti pot is a small pot with a large spout or also you can now buy them as a squirt bottle. You mix a warm saline solution and irrigate your nasal passages.  It helps clear out all of the junk and lets you breathe easier.  Plus you can repeat it a few times throughout the day if you are having a lot of mucus.  Since it is only a saline solution in your nose and not a medication, it will not effect your baby.  Too scared to try a neti pot (or need some additional relief)? Hold your head over a seamed bowl of water and that will also help the mucus drain. (more…)

Building Speech & Language with Top Cat {Lois Ehlert Virtual Book Club}

Sunday, October 21st, 2012 by by

If you missed my post recently I am joining up with a bunch of awesome other bloggers and taking part in the Virtual Book Club for Kids this year! Our spotlight author for September is Lois Ehlert and I checked out a few of her books from the library this month and used them both in therapy and with my own children (E almost 4 and Ev 20 months). Today I am going to share with you all a fun and cute craft to go along with Top Cat along with some ideas on how to use this book to expand children’s speech and language skills.

Book Description

Before I talk about skills you can target..let’s first talk about what this book is about in case you haven’t had the pleasure of reading it yet. In this book, Top Cat rules the roost…until a new cat moves in. At first Top Cat doesn’t like this new cute cat and does not want to share his toys and home. Over time the Top Cat learns how much fun having a friend around can be. In true Lois Ehlert style, the pictures are colorful and (more…)

It’s All Fun & Games….Until It’s Not

Sunday, October 21st, 2012 by by

Kellan has come up with some funny stuff about games in the past couple of days.

1) This morning I decided to get my workout out of the way early.  When Kellan, Larissa and I arrived at Crossfit, a friend of mine also had her 4-year-old with her.  Afterwards on our way home I asked, “Did you guys have fun playing together?”

Kellan’s answer?  “No!  That girl wanted me to play a game with her and Riss.  It’s a game called “House” and it is so dumb.  It’s this game where (more…)
