I Can’t Believe I Actually Had to Say This…

I teach 8th grade and every day is a new adventure. While all days are exhausting, most are at least somewhat amusing.

“Colton, please stop drinking sparkling apple juice from an empty chip bag!”

Yep, I actually had to say that today.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

Sidenote: I do have to hand it to the kid. He didn’t have a cup, so he ate all the chips out of the bag, folded the top down and fashioned his own cup. The downside? Sour Cream and Onion Sparkling Apple Juice. Yuck.

“Yeah, I’m starving.”

“I bet you are. You didn’t eat anything while you were sick. What sounds good?”

“Because I’m so hungry, I’m gonna have to go with a really, really, really big Popsicle.”

“I do.”

“Well there’s a kid at my school who’s gibberish.”

“That’s not a thing you can be.”

“Well, the teacher said the kid was speaking gibberish.”


“So at least I know he has a gibberish accent.

Preschool Shapes and Math Exploration

Since I never liked math growing up, I really am trying hard to teach my children good math habits.  The reason most people don’t like math doesn’t have to to with the real way that mathematicians think about numbers.  I remember 4th grade math we had to memorize the times tables. We had to take a timed test and it started with the 1X and every time that you passed one of the tests, you got a cut out shape of ice cream scoop put on the cone with your name on it. While I’d like to take credit for these, I didn’t come up with the idea myself. I saw it on Pinterest, and all I can say is that I did go to the store myself and I punched the designs into the paint chip cards. Not much effort on my part, but I’m still impressed that I did it…

The Younger and I had a good time with these, after a lot of silent cursing and bruised thumbs because I bought the worst craft punches ever. She got to cut the ribbon and told me where to punch the hearts and stars, and then she did some “free” art with the cutouts. (more…)
