Saving Money……..

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013 by by Nina
Picture from Camp Wander blog where you can grab the recipes for all sorts of goodies :)

I’ve had it with buying things that I can make myself. I started with cleaners. I stopped buying them! I make my own with vinegar and Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds. Works wonderfully, too, I might add. Now, on to detergents. I did the math (not really) and I can save myself a ton of money by making my own. I spend at least $40 a month in detergents alone. That’s dishwasher and laundry detergents. I just spent $30 at Walmart on supplies to make my own, and it should last me a year. I will keep tabs on that and let you know exactly how long it lasts. I’m hoping this works out well. I have three elderly dogs and I’m doing laundry every damn day!! I’m not even kidding. Puke towels, pee towels, cleaning rags…..it’s tiring, and expensive. If I had been smart I would have had them put in the divorce papers that my ex pay for the laundry! It’s mostly the two older dogs who he had before we met that are making the messes. Getting old sucks.

So here I am, sitting in the kitchen, blogging, making my own soap and I can’t help but feel like I should be singing Kumbaya or something like that. Seriously! Who am I?! ;)

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012 by by Cinella @ The Mommy Blog

Hope ya’ll are having a great Holiday with family and friends. I think we’re having a great time! ((These posts are scheduled)) We are out of town and I hope you enjoy this post from Amanda at Simple Saving Savvy. Thanks to Amanda for sharing her recipe with us. I think ya’ll will love it and if you try it out let us know! I have also wanted to make my own fabric softner. I usually don’t use any, but when hubby decides to wash his own clothes (once every few months or so) he goes out and pays full price for that stuff. If you have a recipe that you like to use, feel free to share it with us. Click HERE to see the original post. Enjoy & Merry Christmas!  - Cinella

RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE POWDERED LAUNDRY DETERGENT

1 bar  Fels-Naptha (grated finely)
1 1/2 cups Borax
1 1/2 cups Washing Soda
Mix all ingredients thoroughly and store in an airtight container. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load of laundry.
Your total cost for the batch will be around $2.19. If you use 2 tablespoons per load, you’ll get 36 loads out of the batch which works out to just $0.06 per load.
If you would like, you can also add 1 cup of oxi-clean to the mix to increase stain removing ability. This will increase your cost to about $0.08 per load. (more…)

Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012 by by sugarloafbaby

When Snowflake was just a few weeks old, she developed a nasty eczema rash. At first, we figured it might be a food allergy so I went on an elimination diet for several weeks with no luck. Then we speculated that it might be an environmental allergy to certain chemicals in her baby wash, lotion and detergent. At the time, I was using a pretty standard laundry detergent, Johnson’s baby wash and Johnson’s baby lotion. We threw out the lotions and baby wash and replaced it with Dr. Brommer’s baby mild soap, an all natural lotion and I started using an all natural detergent. That seemed to do the trick, and her rash cleared right up!

Well, after some time using the new detergent, we ran out again and I decided to make our own and see if that works just as well. I was amazed at how easy this detergent was to make!

Back-to-School Clothes Shopping for All Ages

Monday, August 13th, 2012 by by JM Guest Blogger

oldnavy1Your kids might not be excited to return to the classroom, but with a few guidelines and a solid game plan, you can be sure their wardrobe will be ready to head back-to-school. Follow these steps to make back-to-school clothes shopping productive, affordable, and fun—for you AND the kids!

Make a List

Your kid’s school may provide a basic list of wardrobe essentials to plan for, which is a great place to start. Make sure you consider the climate you live in, and what your kids may need to keep warm in the cooler months (even if your summer thermostat is making snow a distant memory!). For older kids, be sure to check if there is a school dress code to observe for modesty guidelines or clothing with a certain social message or branding. Help your kids fit in by not being reprimanded for clothing that breaks the rules, and know what can (and can’t) be used to express their (more…)

Fridge Magnet Cups…LIFESAVER

Thursday, July 12th, 2012 by by Astrid
If you have kids, you know they are always asking for something. Mine ask for something to drink. Mainly water. They know how to dispense the water from the fridge, but the incessant asking for a cup was driving me batty. Actually, driving us both batty. God must have been listening, because not 2 days later, a tutorial on MADE saved my life.

We promptly went to Hobby Lobby the next day for magnets. Then to Target for cups. I even let the kids pick their own cups, and they were horrible, but that is another story.

The next day, while they were at the GPs, I made the cups.

Kid Friendly Grown Up Space

Thursday, June 21st, 2012 by by BrookeLeiberman

Our living room was getting a little out of hand with a mess of toys.  Mr. BBH and I needed a solution to reign in the clutter and figure it out before the new baby comes. (Granted, we have some time, but we wanted to reclaim the space).

Getting ready for baby… 4 months in advance.

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011 by by MommaTrish

DSCN9864I am not a very neat or organized person. I’ve never even really wanted to be one. My mom…. She is very neat and organized. Like obsessively so. (Though she will deny it, trust me – I’m the one who had to live with her.) My penchant for “piles-o-crap” (as she calls them) drives her crazy. If I can’t find a spot for something, or I plan to get to it at a later time, I organize it into a pile with similar stuff. Like in the hall in front of our bedrooms… There is a pile-o-crap for every room next to the door. There are also piles on either end of my couch…and in the kitchen under the coat rack…under the coffee table (though this one is really John’s fault)…and let’s not even touch on my room at this time. (And John would probably say that I should add in that my bookcases are just really tall piles-o-crap…)

I also really, really, really hate to fold clothes. I put it off until there is no more sitting room on my couch. My couch is big enough to handle me, the boys, and Belly all at one time – more often than not we’re lucky to have room for just two of us.

So see…. I’m not a messy person… I’m really not. I pick up and clean every day. But all these piles-o-crap and the mountain of laundry kind of ruin the effects of cleaning.

Wondering what this has to do with getting ready for Mason?

Ever since I got pregnant, my energy has taken a hit. I mean, it does every time, but this time it’s been even harder. No, as some will point out, it’s not because I’m home all day with a 2 1/2 year old. Ryan was about the same age when I was pregnant with Belly, and as I tell everyone, if I can keep up with toddler-Ryan while pregnant, toddler-Belly should be no problem. I think, that it’s partially because we have so much to do now. There are now two older kids to get to activities – and to get through homework. I cook more. There’s like double the laundry. More commitments to the boys’ school. I acted as my mom’s chauffer for most of this pregnancy as well. Plus, John actually expects more out of me now since I am a stay-at-home mom, and no longer a full-time college student.

Oh, and a 2 1/2 year old and a large idiot dog. (That’s said with love by the way…) (more…)

October Menu Plan

Saturday, October 1st, 2011 by by sugarloafbaby

It’s that time of the month again! A new month means a new menu! The theme for this month is hearty soups, stews and roasts to keep us warm while we wait to turn on the heat. Oh, and all are budget friendly of course, with the average dinner providing leftovers for lunch! For breakfast, baked oatmeal, pumpkin and apple muffins will appear and for dessert, we’ll have fresh pumpkin pie and other seasonal treats.

Click here to view our October Dinner Menu.
This is the 3rd month we have begun using monthly menu plans, and I am amazed at how well it is working for us! I would definitely not be able to keep our grocery budget as low as it is without a menu plan. Planning out meals for the entire month allows me to take advantage of sales I otherwise would have overlooked. Although we are still working out the kinks with our lowered grocery budget, I know that the number one way to succeed with it is by using monthly menu plans. I have tried weekly and biweekly menu-planning, but nothing has worked as well as monthly plans have.

This month I will also be working on continuing to freeze meals and foods in preparation for the new baby. I also would like to try my hand at canning some grape jelly since grapes are so cheap right now.

What foods are you looking forward to cooking/baking in October? Share in the comments below!

Monthly Menu Plans

Monday, September 5th, 2011 by by sugarloafbaby
Last month, I decided to start doing a monthly menu plan on the advice of The Grocery Shrink. (By the way, f you haven’t read her ebook or blog, I encourage you to check it out!) Not only has this been much easier than I originally thought, it has made my days and weeks less stressful and allowed us to save a bunch of money by avoiding eating out due to my not knowing what to make for dinner.
I was able to quickly fill in all the meals by assigning each day of the week a theme. Here are some of my themes:
  • Mondays: Soup Night
  • Tuesday: Big Meat Night
  • Wednesday: Group Meal Night
  • Thursday: Crock-Pot Night
  • Friday: Homemade Pizza Night
  • Saturday: Grilling Out Night (Until summer ends that is)
  • Sunday: Easy/Leftover/Freezer Meal Night
You can view our family’s September Menu Plan here.
Monthly menu-planning makes it easier to take advantage of early sales for meals later in the month, and it actually reduces the time spent shopping. Less money is wasted on impulse buys and more money is saved or allocated for stockpiling the pantry.
I am loving this new method of menu planning! Of course, life often gets in the way of seeing this plan completely to fruition, but having an idea of what to do has helped so much!
How do you menu plan?

Menu Plan Monday

Monday, June 13th, 2011 by by Cinella @ The Mommy Blog

Yeah….. I’m a day late! Boy have things been like super busy around here! I’ll just skip all the mumbo jumbo and get to the Menu Planning… I kinda did make a menu yesterday while I was making lunch, but it really didn’t fall together right because I’m out of hamburger meat!

Monday: Twist of Lime Not Quite Tacos, Tacos (I used the “Hint of Lime” Totistos Tortilla chips instead of taco shells, but oh so yummy! I also used some salsa to add to the rice & made refried beans!

Tuesday: Creamy Chicken n Capers with Red Potato Mashed Potatoes & Green beans!
