Monthly Menu Plans

Monday, September 5th, 2011 by by
Last month, I decided to start doing a monthly menu plan on the advice of The Grocery Shrink. (By the way, f you haven’t read her ebook or blog, I encourage you to check it out!) Not only has this been much easier than I originally thought, it has made my days and weeks less stressful and allowed us to save a bunch of money by avoiding eating out due to my not knowing what to make for dinner.
I was able to quickly fill in all the meals by assigning each day of the week a theme. Here are some of my themes:
  • Mondays: Soup Night
  • Tuesday: Big Meat Night
  • Wednesday: Group Meal Night
  • Thursday: Crock-Pot Night
  • Friday: Homemade Pizza Night
  • Saturday: Grilling Out Night (Until summer ends that is)
  • Sunday: Easy/Leftover/Freezer Meal Night
You can view our family’s September Menu Plan here.
Monthly menu-planning makes it easier to take advantage of early sales for meals later in the month, and it actually reduces the time spent shopping. Less money is wasted on impulse buys and more money is saved or allocated for stockpiling the pantry.
I am loving this new method of menu planning! Of course, life often gets in the way of seeing this plan completely to fruition, but having an idea of what to do has helped so much!
How do you menu plan?

Yeah….. I’m a day late! Boy have things been like super busy around here! I’ll just skip all the mumbo jumbo and get to the Menu Planning… I kinda did make a menu yesterday while I was making lunch, but it really didn’t fall together right because I’m out of hamburger meat!

Monday: Twist of Lime Not Quite Tacos, Tacos (I used the “Hint of Lime” Totistos Tortilla chips instead of taco shells, but oh so yummy! I also used some salsa to add to the rice & made refried beans!

Tuesday: Creamy Chicken n Capers with Red Potato Mashed Potatoes & Green beans!

Menu Plan Monday – Homely

Monday, May 23rd, 2011 by by

OMG! How much is gas where you live? Here it hovers over $3.79 – $3.89! We haven’t hit the $4.00 marks yet, but this week, and the past few weeks, I am driving as little as possible. I haven’t even gone to the post office. I’ve already decided I’m only going to take Vetty to Karate class twice this week, and I’m hoping to go to WAG (Walgreens), the post office, and the flea market! So I hope to stick to the menu plan this week!

Monday:Savory Spinach n Capers Chicken with rigatoni with garlic bread
Tuesday: Spaghetti n Meatballs

Coupons galore! Day (lost track) of 60/300!

Today was the first day in a while that I felt well enough to do much of anything. Unfortunately, Charlie Bear didn’t get the memo that we were supposed to be feeling better. He’s been sick for nearly 2 weeks now, running a fever off and on. I swear it’s due to those blasted shots. I wish I could convince Chris to fore go them. However, that’s a post for another day :)

A while ago,  I asked Chris to rearrange furniture for me. He hates doing this, but he does it without too much complaint. I am a truly lucky gal!

I could have sworn I posted a picture of my desk area, but I can’t find it. So this is what my desk area looked like, and what people saw when first entering my home:

This is a major work in progress. It was all neat and organized, but the kids kept messing with everything, and it became a disaster area. (more…)

Day 18!

Saturday, May 7th, 2011 by by

I’ve slowed my productivity waaaay down. I have been feeling so run down since my sunburn happened. It’s actually taken a lot out of me. I’ve also decreased my meds quite a bit, and that is making my EDS feel much worse, which doesn’t inspire me to get up and clean and purge. But – I am still trucking along. One project a day. I don’t think I’ll stay within my “300″ part of my challenge, but will definitely complete this in 60 days, even though we are leaving in three weeks for a week long vacation!

My friend Kim suggested labeling my diaper bins with luggage tags. What an amazingly simple idea! I had never thought of using luggage tags! I will definitely keep that in mind for future label ideas. I didn’t have any luggage tags, however, so I had to pull out one of my favorite home items – Meet “Lenny” my Laminator. Yes, he is so amazing he deserves a name.
Chris bought me Lenny when we were homeschooling. He has helped me create Christmas presents, games for the kids, and LABELS!

Day – Get back on track!

Friday, May 6th, 2011 by by

My house was destroyed this weekend as 13 little, adorable, children ran through it for two days. I have only half-heartedly tried to get it back in shape, but today I did a good portion of it. I figured we would clean for 45 minutes and thats what we did. Amazing what a little family can accomplish in 45 minutes.
This was what my garage sale money went to

This is the new bin for my diapers. All of my diapers, minus the pile I’m giving away to friends, fit in here! I was surprised! Chris doesn’t like the set up as much because he can’t easily see what he wants – but I was tired of seeing the diapers spilling out all of the time. The little basket on top was given to me at Anastasia’s baby shower! It holds the diaper accessories, such as snappi’s, pins, diaper cream, and baby powder. I have to have everything in order. It took me a long time to figure out a way to make the colors work. There is a pattern there. (more…)

Yard Sale

Thursday, May 5th, 2011 by by

I know I’ve been slacking on posting. On Sunday, the day of the Yard Sale, I was dumb and forgetful and ended up with a wicked sunburn. The past few days have been spent feeling quite sick and trying to cool my skin. My face blistered all over, but its now beginning to heal a little bit. I’ll have to post a picture of my skin soon!

The Yard Sale went well. I made about $100. I pretty much gave away a lot of things too. One lady forgot her money so I gave her a whole bin of girl clothes for free. Another couple had a baby 17 days prior. I think he was in the NICU. They wanted all three bins of boy clothes – about 6 bins worth because they were all overflowing. I told them $5. They were thrilled and that made my day more than making money. I know someone will get to wear the clothes that I have so many memories of. There was another lady whose daughter was the sweetest thing and she was very sweet too. She had just found out she was pregnant and was counting change to buy things. For about $3.50 they walked away with a bunch of baby stuff, the entire Rock Band set (game, 2 guitars, and the drumset plus 6 drumsticks – and not the cheap kind), and little house knick-knacks. Her daughter was so appreciative and stunned. Another pregnant lady bought my pack-n-play that came with all the accessories, two of my slings, and my body pillow for $20. I could have easily sold the slings online for at least $30 a piece but I’d rather make someones day than make money.

Some people took advantage of us, and they make me quite angry. I won’t go into it – but they put a damper on an otherwise very nice day. What we didn’t sell went to donation, and now I can get back to organizing!

Day 9 of 60/300

Thursday, April 28th, 2011 by by

Today I spent the morning working on my new coupon binder. I totally rehauled it and I love the way it looks! I haven’t had much time to work on it so I put some CSI on this morning and worked for a bit. Afterwards I got to reorganizing the playroom and sorting books. I need to get the books sorted prior to the yard sale. Thus far I’m about 1/3rd of the way through and this is the pile of books to be sold/donated

There is nearly three times this amount that is going back on the shelves so far, and I still have three shelving units to sort through.
I used to have my diapers housed in toy bins but I want to get the box cubicles with the baskets so I removed all my diapers and donated my toy bins to the kids playroom – thus freeing up numerous bins in the playroom. It was like toy bin shuffle. I haven’t bought the cubicles yet so right now my diapers are residing on the recliner in my room (more…)

Day 8 of 60/300

Thursday, April 28th, 2011 by by

This weekend is quite busy, and requires my house be in semi-order. On Saturday we are celebrating Charlie’s 1st birthday with a small BBQ at the house. His birthday is on Friday but it makes more sense to celebrate it on Saturday. I can’t believe my baby is turning 1, this year has flown by. So my house needs to be presentable for the party and since I’ve torn it apart at the moment it is anything but presentable. On Sunday I am having the first Yard Sale. I’ll probably do an additional one at the end of the 60 days, but I have so many things I’m getting rid of I need to do one now. So I have to finish purging the major areas to prepare for that. My room and the Master Closet are nearly complete and today I organized the linen closet. I shall take a picture of that tomorrow. It used to be overflowing to the point where it was hard to shut the door, but I’m getting rid of so many linens that there is a completely empty shelf now. I wish I had remembered to take a photo prior to the purge.
So today I organized my room some, completely moved out most of the non-bedroom furniture that was residing in there, put back together most of my closet, cleaned out the linen closet, scrubbed the kids bathroom completely clean (it took me an hour of scrubbing in there to get it to my liking), and began purging the books. I have decided I’m also getting rid of my craft table/coupon table/sewing table and buying a desk instead. I think a desk would work better for me because it would have storage areas. I tried to go to Goodwill and Target today but both were closed. As we don’t celebrate Easter this kind of surprised me. I hate shopping at Walmart and I wasn’t desperate enough to try there so I’ll make my runs tomorrow.
And finally – the crayon caddy is a hit. (more…)
