I have been blogging about my smartphone for the last few weeks and I have really enjoyed it.  I keep thinking about new things I want to tell you about my phone.  I think I have explored almost everything with it now, but who knows there could be more cool stuff I just haven’t discovered yet.  I don’t know how many people have been following the “JM Mobile Mamas” on the blog, but I am curious from reading through our posts, which phone sounds most interesting to you?  If you were going to upgrade your phone, do you have one you have been eyeballing?

I knew I wanted an Android phone.  I know the Blackberry and Apple iPhone are very popular too; and as a matter of fact, whenever I talked to anyone about getting a phone everyone said get the iPhone.  When I watch Cramer on Mad Money (I love this show because he entertains me), I have heard him advise people not to invest in stocks that are competing against Apple.  Apparently Apple is the king of the castle right now but I have always liked the underdog.  Not that I really think the Android market is the underdog.

I happen to LOVE Google which is probably why I wanted an Android phone.  I use (more…)

How to Get Started with Your iPhone

So since I’ve talked about all the wonderful bells and whistles that came with my iPhone, and the cool apps I’ve added; I decided to tell you how to do a few of these things. The very first thing to do when you get your iPhone is to plug the usb port into your computer. This will prompt you for iTunes, begin the download, and everything you need for your phone is there.

Adding music is very simple. Once iTunes is installed and registered and you’ve registered your phone, iTunes will then add all the music you already have on your computer to its library. Make sure your iPhone is connected and in the left hand column and make sure your phone is selected. Then click the top tab and go to music. You should then be able to add all of it, just certain albums, or your favorite songs by clicking the check mark next to it. After you have checked all the ones you want on your phone, simply click the “sync” button. It takes a few seconds, but then all the music you selected is automatically put in the iPod area of your iPhone!! You can also make certain playlists, or just have them all on the same one.

iPhone for Kids?

I’m not 100% sure how, but every time I take my eyes off my phone, my kids find it. They sneak it off and I go frantically looking for it to find Rileigh hiding behind her door playing with the Fish Food app and Sammy the fish. I think she’s actually gotten a higher score than me. Rileigh doesn’t just call it “mommy’s phone” anymore, she has upgraded to “my mommy’s iPhone!!” or “Mommy, here is your iPhone!!” The sad thing is, she could probably work it better than me. It really shocks me how she knows exactly where to go and exactly what to pull up! It’s obvious that an iPhone is so user friendly that a 4 year old can maneuver it.

So I’m going to list a few apps out there that I’ve found to be kid friendly. Rileigh, of course, knows what the icons on my phone look like and helps herself to whatever she’s in the mood to play. First, we love the paint app. She can draw with her fingers in any color and even color in coloring pages. I must admit that I’ve sat there for secretly long periods of time enjoying the app with her. Second is a simple piano app called Virtuoso. She can play the piano and it sounds quite nice.  She even sings along with it. It’s interesting hearing the Spongebob Squarepants’ theme song on a piano played by a 4 year old.

Perfect Timing for Pictures

I think one of my favorite options on my new phone is the quality camera I have on there. It is the best camera I’ve had on a phone. Now, it ain’t like my Nikon D3000 but hey, I’m not complaining because the pictures still come out great.

The reason this is important to me know as opposed to before is because I have 3 beautiful children that do silly things & sometimes lugging around my big ol’ Nikon isn’t an option. I can capture that all too sweet moment and not worry about losing it forever.

These are a few pics I snapped with the phone when we were outside playing. I could have brought the Nikon out but didn’t feel like it. Still, I am happy with the pictures I was able to get.

Typing faster on my smartphone now

I am getting the hang of my phone now.  I haven’t turned into a speed demon texter yet.  For that matter, I haven’t actually texted yet.  I haven’t paid for the text messaging feature for my phone so that is why.  It’s not so much that I am cheap.  I am, but it’s really just that I don’t want or need to text.  I have instant messenger through my phone and I can chat with anyone I want to chat with on there.  My daughter, on the other hand, is a little obsessed with texting.  She really wants to text someone with my phone.  Who she wants to text, I don’t know.  She pretends to text on my phone and also one of our old phones that doesn’t work.  She and Jeremy keep fighting over that darn phone and it doesn’t even work!  In my head when I think of texting, I think of teenagers.  Since I am not one, I guess I just don’t care if I am cool and can text.  I know other people text besides teens.  It’s just that texting wasn’t the reason I wanted a smartphone.

Even though I am not really interested in texting, I was able to get some good ideas on typing faster by doing a search for how to text faster.  I figured that if I did a search for typing faster I would get help with typing on a traditional keyboard and I already know how to do that.  What I wanted to find out was how to type faster on a smartphone.  I also did a search for how to type faster on an iPhone, how to type faster on a Blackberry, and how to type faster on an Android phone.  So here is what I have learned, some of it was (more…)

Wherefore art thou Facebook?

Ah, on my BlackBerry! Can I just tell you how much I HEART my Facebook app on my phone? I’m hooked. I’m a Facebook junkie anyway. Let me clarify. I don’t play those silly games on there but I love reconnecting to old friends and my family across the world. Chatting with my cousins in Argentina is the best!

It also keeps me updated with my triplet mommy friends from all over the world. You know, we feel like a special group and finding other moms like us nearby is sometimes a challenge but Facebook makes it possible for us to chat, message one another, compare stories, pictures…you name it!

Because Facebook is my social network here at home, having the app on my phone makes it that much sweeter. I think my favorite part of the app is how easy it is to upload pics to my wall. Let’s be real, it isn’t always very convenient to lug around my Nikon D3000. It’s huge BUT my phone isn’t and that baby goes with me EVERYWHERE. I can snap a picture on the go and upload it immediately. Love, love, love it!

Budgets and Weight Loss

So I’ve recently found a few more applications that I love!!! I didn’t realize that there were so many companies with apps! There are even banks and companies where you can view your accounts and make payments. I’m starting to wonder if it’s even worth it to keep home internet. Ok, it is, but it’s still really cool to be able to do the same things on the go as I can sitting at home. With me being a procrastinator and all, I won’t have any more last minute “rush homes” to pay a bill online. I really rely on the internet so much for the balancing of my day to day life, most importantly including finances.

So the first app I’m gonna explain is the budget app. I’ve been using it for about a week now and it really helps to see how much money and what bills you have. It puts what you do have into perspective and makes it easier to keep track of what you spend. It has whole separate categories for each expense and lets you roll over your previously inputted bills to the next month. It has options for bills, groceries (more…)

My Biggest Smartphone Obstacle: Typing

Yesterday we went to our homeschool group meeting. We were having an indoor play date. The kids were contained and Kelly was with me so I thought I would get on my Motorola Cliq and do some stuff. I was so happy to be able to get stuff done while my kids played. Unfortunately, I am very slow at typing on my phone so after a while I got frustrated and decided to just hang out instead.

This is not how I want things to be though. I want to be a speedy typer so I can USE my phone. If I can’t type fast on my phone or if it takes me thirty minutes to type out two sentences, my phone isn’t going to be all that useful to me. Sure, I can play games and check my Facebook updates, but I want to be able to do more than that with my phone. So I have made it my mission to figure out the best way to type faster on my phone.

My phone comes with a QWERTY keyboard and there is a touch screen keyboard too. I usually use the QWERTY keyboard but I type really, really slow with it. I am not sure how much of this is just that I need practice. I know when I started using the internet I wasn’t a super speedy typer like I am now. My days of paper planning are over

If you follow my blog, you know this about me. I am a little obsessed with goal setting. I think every other post of mine is somehow about trying to get better organized or about setting goals. I have this day planner that I have had for a while. It has been nicely decorated by my daughter Angie. She wanted to make sure I knew it was mine so she wrote my name on it for me. Ya know my name, “mom.” I used to use my day planner religiously but for the last several months I have rarely used it. I am ready to get back on track.

I had been thinking about buying a new day planner. That’s what I do when I need motivation. I go out and buy myself another day planner as if that will magically make me more organized. I ask for a new day planner for my birthday and Christmas present all the time, but for some reason nobody ever takes the hint and buys me one. I think everyone else in my life thinks that a day planner is a lame gift. Now that I have my phone though, I really think my days of paper planning are over.

My Map App

Hmmmm, I thought it was cool to use Mapquest on the internet to get from point A to point B. Well, I figured out how to use my Map App (tee-hee…that sounds funny) and I gotta say, it rocks! It really wasn’t that difficult to figure out, once I had some time to sit down and check it out.

Ah, the eluded time factor. You know, having triplets and a little business can really put a dent in to time. I have a feeling even more of it is going to disappear as both sets of grandparents will be gone for the next month!

BUT, like I was saying, the Map App is awesome. It was really cool to use. As always, I like to plan ahead. This meant sitting down and putting in the address of my friend’s home, Susan, in to my phone the night before we were going over there. She has triplets 6.5 months younger than the kids. It was the first time I would be going to see her new house.
