Yee-Haw! Cowboy Birthday Hoedown!

Sunday, December 19th, 2010 by by

Howdy, partners! My son turned 2 over the weekend, and we turned our territory into a western ranch for the occasion. For the invitations, I used cowboy terms like “saddle up” and “mosey over,” “bend an elbow and cool yer heals with the other buckaroos,” etc., letting guests RSVP by saying, “Yee-haw! We’ll be there” or “Dagnabbit, we can’t make it.” I made the envelopes out of brown paper lunch bags. I cut off the bottoms of the bag to do this, then I used the bottoms to make stand-up name tags for each deputy.

My son was the Sheriff, and all his friends were the Deputies. They got badges with their favor bags, which I filled with cowboy and indian figures, cowboy crayons, and kazoos. Each cowboy (and cowgirl, his big sister) also got their own stick horse to keep, thanks to the local dollar store.

Noah’s 2nd Birthday Party

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 by by

We packed quite a few people into our apartment for Noah’s birthday party on Sunday; roughly 20 adults, and precisely 6 toddlers. I invited guests to come at 2:00, since most of the kids go for their nap around noon, including Noah. Noah went down for his nap before noon, and slept until shortly after 2. This meant we could do food prep uninterrupted (which I always seem to be doing up until the bitter end when I entertain). We were also able to put up the decorations at this time. Noah may not have gone so easily for his nap had we decorated the room with a Mickey Mouse theme beforehand! (more…)

Beautiful Birthday Party!

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 by by

I really couldn’t have asked for it to go any better. The rain that they said was going to come, never did. The company was wonderful. The kids had a blast. The food was great! By 7pm, I was totally exhausted. No joke. I just vegged on the couch until I went to bed.

The party had just started and the kids came down to discover they had these cool balloons tied to their chairs. It provided a good 15 minutes of straight giggles!

Right after this picture of Sofi, I asked her (more…)

Monkey see, Monkey do!

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 by by

That is our party theme for this year. I don’t think they are quite old enough to tell me what they want so I am going to enjoy getting to pick this one out.

Um, truth be told…I had it picked out at the same time I picked out their ducky theme last year. Yeah, I’m lame like that. I don’t have anything else better to do. Yeah right (insert sarcasm here).

Then I had to figure out what monkey theme to go with and (more…)

Jonah’s Birthday & Zoo Birthday Cake

Friday, September 4th, 2009 by by

It’s been two weeks since Jonah’s birthday, and I have yet to blog about it. This is, in part, because I haven’t really blogged much at all in the last two weeks. But, I feel a little obligated to talk about his birthday, since I mentioned it’s upcoming in several previous posts.

On August 15th, 2009, my son officially left babyhood and entered toddlerhood. Of course we still call him “the baby” and some will argue that he *is* still just a baby in many ways. But, everything from his reasoning to his behaviors to his growing sense of mobility, are far out of the realm of being infantile.

The birthday party was incredible fun. It was mostly (more…)

Birthday Party

Monday, August 3rd, 2009 by by

Thank God it’s over!! I absolutely hate throwing birthday parties, or any party of any kind for that matter, but it seems to be a yet another thing a mother must be able to do perfectly these days.

It’s so stressful worrying about who to invite and who will get along. Or maybe I’m the only person who worries about this. Our problem is that my husband’s family is so big that, unless we want to start renting a hall, it hardly leaves any room for our friends. So I then worry about which friends to pick and if they will know each other and have someone to talk to.

And that doesn’t even begin to touch on my worrying about (more…)

Overheard At A Birthday Party

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 by by

I love my son so much….it never fails that no matter where we are and in any given situation he can bring light and love into the lives of those around him.

This past weekend we were at my niece Sofia’s 2nd birthday and Jacob was the only child there that did not have a vagina. I don’t think it really phased him much because he just played along and seemed to enjoy himself. I was worried about how we’d cope at the party given the fact that Jacob was not in the best spirits all morning before the party – in fact I called Lisa ahead of time and warned her that my clan of kids was whiny and irritable and that we were going to attempt the party but might have to make a short appearance and disappear early to avoid my son being the center of attention on Sofia’s special day – and let me tell you his type of entertainment on a whiny day is not anything like Sofia’s blow out the candle, open the presents kind of day. I was shocked and impressed by his good nature and well behaved (more…)

Party Planning as Time Slips Away

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 by by

Life has been barreling forward at a pace I’m not quite accustomed too and every week I have had just enough time to blink before Sunday has arrived and a new Monday has returned.  I feel incredibly frustrated with how quickly time is flying by in 2009 because I had high hopes for this year and a list about ten miles long of the things we were going to do as a family, none of which have come to pass as of yet…but gosh darn it I’m really hoping to get that trip to the zoo in this coming weekend.

Today marks the first official “holy crap his birthday is in 2 weeks” day of planning for Jacob’s birthday party.  We are having a smallish party this year with about 15 people including children, and Jacob has requested a pirate party – ok I can do that.  I’m not really sure that Jacob understands what a pirate is except that he knows they like treasure chests and say “yo ho blow the man down” – heh.  I’ve already gone ahead and ordered some party supplies off of ebay including pirate plates, napkins, a foil balloon, some loot boxes shaped like treasure chests and my mom picked up a cool pinata in the shape of a treasure chest…a la Pirates of the Caribbean (not our theme but it works right?).  I think I’m going to keep the food quite simple and have some pepperoni and cheese pizza with fruit of some sorts (watermelon maybe?) then some snacky snacks like cheesies…I’m not ordering a cake but rather I’m going to make some homemade cucpakes with little pirate flags stuck in them that I picked up from Michael’s Craft Store.  I’m not really sure if we’ll do any party games aside from the pinata…although I did see a cool “pin the eye patch on the pirate” game that I could probably make myself (more…)

Is it really the end of May?!

Friday, May 22nd, 2009 by by

I have, um, 25 days until Zach turns 5, and only 23 until his birthday party. I’ve been putting off really planning and sending out invites to his party all month thinking, “No, I don’t have to do it now, I have plenty of time.” But I don’t! I have to get in the invites to his school friends TOMORROW because that’s their last day of school and the school’s not allowed to give out addresses and phone numbers. Probably I shouldn’t have put off sending those…

Which leads to a new set of worms… What do I do if none of Zach’s friends can come to his birthday party? This is his first real one and he’ll be devastated if none can come, and I won’t even be able to call in backups because I can’t reach anyone. Or what if they come and they’re mean? One of the little boys he wants to invite has been mean to him lately (or so Zach was saying, now he’s saying he wasn’t), and I’ve never heard him talking about playing with two of the other boys. I’ve only ever heard him talking about playing with and being friends with two of the boys he’s inviting. On top of that, he won’t invite any little girls from his class. Wouldn’t be an issue except (more…)
