A Look Back: One Year of Cloth Diapering

Monday, November 23rd, 2009 by by

Well, technically I didn’t start full time until he was 2 weeks old. I did use them occasionally until 2 weeks. Here are some tips, life lessons, and thoughts on the first year of cloth diapering.

DO NOT prep your prefolds by boiling them in a tiny apartment. Trust me.

Don’t show off your stash to family members. They don’t care. I excitedly showed my stash to my mother in law, only to get asked why I wouldn’t just use disposables. Didn’t you see the wool soaker with a whale on the butt? Hello!

Expect resistance from your SO. Be prepared to (more…)

You asked: Cloth Diaper Questions Answered.

Monday, November 16th, 2009 by by

Recently I asked you all to submit your questions to me, the self proclaimed Queen of the Cloth!  I have answered them all here publicly so that perhaps someone else can benefit.  If anyone else has ideas to help these lovely ladies feel free to jump in.  I can only speak from personal experience.

Stephanie Haynes: “My 15 month old daughter sleeps 12 hours at night (which I am SO thankful for, especially with a newborn too). We’ve been battling diaper rash with her and I’m concerned that it gets worse when she sits in a wet or dirty diaper at night. I don’t want to wake her to change her diaper, so I’ve been trying to figure out a better night time (more…)

I hope everyone has enjoyed “All About Wool Week here on Dirty Diaper Laundry.  This was an experiment for me.  Trying wool for the first time was both overwhelming and exciting.  Turns out, wool isn’t the complicated cloth diaper solution you think it is.  I’m so grateful to the many companies who sent their diapers for me to test, as well as the companies who are sponsoring giveaways.  If you haven’t already, make sure you enter the great giveaways going on for Wool Week, which are all listed on the right.

Since I like to show you the diapers on video, here is a short overview (more…)

How to Lanolize Your Wool. A Quick Video Guide.

Monday, September 28th, 2009 by by

woolweek copy This post is part of “All About Wool Week”

Lanolizing wool seems complicated but it is truly simple!  Don’t over think it!  I did tons of research before I set about lanolizing my covers for the first time.  While I always, always encourage people to do their research I think over researching can be a bad thing.  If you spend hours reading about washing and lanolizing wool it seems like a feat!  I hope the video shows you how easy it can be, although I am silly and thought I was recording portions of it but actually wasn’t!  Here is what I do: (more…)

Ladies… Keep your husbands away from your Wool. You have been warned!

woolweek copy This post is part of “All About Wool Week”

Before I say this, let me state that my husband has been Phenomenal with cloth diapering thus far.  Though hesitant at first, he has managed to learn almost all of the crazy terms I throw around like “AIO, Pocket, Fitted, WAHM, etc.”  For some reason, he really likes the “WAHM” one and tries to throw it into conversations.

When I decided I was going to dive head first into wool he was already skeptical of how it worked.  I described it to him, saying simply that wool is (more…)

ABC Day 1

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 by by

Day 1 in Vegas has been equally frustrating and awesome. We has a 6 am flight to Chicago. That didn’t go so well. There was so much fog that we couldn’t land and had to circle over lake michigan for over an hour. Missed my connecting and after some sniffles was able to be bumped up on the standby list. Baby and crying mom equal sympathy. We made it to Vegas and my luggage was there! I want to say that Fletcher was amazing. I took a shuttle to the hotel and after a shower and quick lunch we made it to ABC Kids Expo.

After spending 3 hours there I don’t even feel like I scratched the surface.

Now, what you have all been waiting for… What is the Econobum?
Here it is.

As you are reading this we are on our way to Las Vegas to attend the biggest juvenile trade show in the US.  ABC Kids Expo showcases the newest and biggest names in the Children and Baby industry.  Many of the exhibitors are Cloth Diaper manufacturers and Baby Carrier Companies, which are of the most interest to me.  I have already announced that Bum Genius is going to be showing off the Econobum at ABC.  They also have one more product coming out, which you and I will find out about soon!

I am going to be tweeting the Expo live when I can, so if you want to learn about Fletcher and I’s adventures in Vegas (more…)

Endangered Species- The “Cloth Diapering Mama”

Thursday, September 10th, 2009 by by

This weekend I spotted a very rare species, the “Cloth Diapering Mama.”  This species is most likely found in areas where granola is present, i.e.- Boulder, Colorado, Ithaca, New York, San Francisco, California.  Rarely is the “Cloth Diapering Mama” found outside of its natural habitat.  In this instance I spotted one in Quinnebaug Connecticut!  This one admitted to be the only one of her kind in the area.  She did say that she is in a rehabilitation program and is trying to breed more “Cloth Diapering Mamas”  The “CDMs” almost became extinct in the 1980’s but recently began a breeding program to save their species.

The good news is that there are many such breeding programs happening in areas (more…)
