How to Market a Cloth Diaper Business

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 by by

Or “How to Sell Lots and Lots of Diapers!”

In my digital travels, I’ve come into contact with many, many moms running cloth diaper businesses. Whether you sew your own, retail, or wholesale, a cloth diaper business faces a multitude of unique challenges. If you yourself are in the cloth diaper business (or any business for that matter!), read on to discover how to market a cloth diaper business!

Before you put up your website, decide on a name, decide what diapers to carry and what color scheme to use, etc. You need to stop, sit down, and think about someone else : customers. Specifically, your customers.

Diaper businesses have one major obstacle that I see almost daily – they all blend in. It’s hard to stand out when you offer the same product as a million other websites, but diaper companies often make it harder on themselves by neglecting their USP – unique selling proposition.

It seems that most diaper companies are split between marketing as “eco friendly” and “budget friendly” – and some try to ride the fence and be both.

Even those who try and niche smaller than that are too afraid of niching down to actually say so. Recently, I spoke with a cloth diaper store owner who prefers to ship her diapers locally only. What do you see when landing on her website? National shipping in Canada for a set price.

Does “National Flat Rate Shipping” say “I prefer to ship locally?” No – it says exactly the opposite!

Cloth diapering for the rest of us

I admit it : I really don’t care how bad disposable diapers are for the environment. I don’t care that they take forever to break down in landfills, or that they’re made with chemically questionable materials. The ease of going to Wal-Mart and grabbing a package of Huggies off the shelf, knowing that baby will be dry and there’s nothing more to be done, is immensely appealing. I even think the Pooh Bear designs are sweet and I kind of like the way they smell. But I’m also cheap, which is why I switched over to cloth diapers five months ago. The money factor is also what keeps me going when cloth diapering gets boring.

I was a disposable user for a long time. All three of my oldest kids wore Pampers and then moved on to Pull-Ups. I never, ever considered using cloth diapers (other than briefly thinking, what a bunch of crackpot nuts those cloth diaper users are). Then when I was pregnant with Hobie and Coral was still wearing Pampers Cruisers at night, Pampers did something sneaky and redesigned their diapers. They essentially (more…)

Cloth For The Coast

ClothForTheCoastAdLAFAYETTE, Louisiana (July 6, 2010) – Tereson Dupuy knows about solving problems.  When the inventor of the modern cloth diaper and founder of FuzziBunz® cloth diapers heard about a program pleading for supplies to help clean up the oil spill along the Gulf shore, the Louisiana native realized she could help.  Today, Dupuy and the company are officially announcing a nationwide drive to put the ultra-absorbent materials used in her cloth diapers and other baby materials to a different use for animal rescue and clean up.

After watching the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico devastate her family’s favorite beaches, precious wildlife and threaten the way of life for her hometown of New Orleans, Dupuy wanted to help.  “The rescue workers are in need of absorbent materials and we are in the business of manufacturing one of the most absorbent materials around, so it’s a no-brainer,” she says. “I’m so glad we can do our part to help in this attack on nature right in our backyard.”

Dupuy and FuzziBunz® are putting out a nationwide call for old cloth diaper inserts (more…)

Katydid One Size Review

Friday, July 9th, 2010 by by

The Katydid One Size was a diaper that to me, at first, didn’t look like it would set itself apart.  I had seen a lot of people proclaim them to be great, and had been requested to review the diaper many times.  Franklin Goose (DDL Affiliate) approached me to see if I would like to review a cloth diaper for them and since they sold Katydid I was happy to oblige!

Ease of Use ✰✰✰✰ The Katydid was a total of 6 or 4 snaps to affix when you put it on your baby.  If you watch the video you will see what I mean.  For babies slightly larger than an infant but smaller than by son (22 pounds) you will need to do 6.  There are snaps to control the wing droopage, one on each tab.   But there are only2 so on certain sizes you won’t need them.  For me I only need to do 4 snaps, 2 on each tab.  Stuffing the diaper requires going in from the front.  Sometimes front stuffed pockets have a smaller opening and can be a little harder to do but this one has lots of room.

Bang for the Buck ✰✰✰✰ The Katydid is 17.95 and (more…)

The Cloth Diaper Industry is Booming!

Monday, June 28th, 2010 by by

All of us are lucky.  We are raising our children in a time where we have choices. Upmteen million bazillion choices. We can find wonderful products that not only make child rearing easier, but that are for the most part, good for baby and planet.

Of course one of these products is the modern cloth diaper.  I had tons of choices while pregnant.  I looked at them all and made decisions that were compatible with my family and lifestyle.  I chose bumGenius, Thirsties, chinese prefolds, Blueberry, G Diapers, and some WAHM diapers.  These were brands I researched and that already had a loyal following.

Now my son is 1.5 years old and I have seen the cloth diaper industry grow immensely in that time.  In fact, I have seen new brands hit the scene, some of which have EXPLODED! The innovations within the last 2 years (more…)

Anything that says the word “BUM”, I am always looking.  Why you might ask?  Well my daughter having a major allergic reaction to disposable diapers, cloth is something that is very important to us. With that said, when I saw Bum Essentials, I immediately had to look at these and figure out what they were.  Guess what, they were cloth diapers to my liking and was so excited to check these out.

I was sent the Bumbino Diaper Giddy Up Green which included (more…)

A Peek at my Cloth Diaper Stash

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 by by

Instead of the usual video review, I am taking a week off.  I only have 3 diapers I am reviewing and need an extra week before I am ready to publish.

So….. since many YouTube commenters and blog readers alike have asked, I took a short video to show my most used diapers.  We are definitely a pocket family.  I still have my original bumGenius! 3.0’s that I bought while pregnant.  Those make up a large percentage of what I use daily.  They are also great for my husband who gets tired of using a different diaper each change.  That is my job!

So if you didn’t see this already on Facebook, take a look!  Expect a video on (more…)

When will we max out the cute cloth diaper names?

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 by by

Lately I have had this nagging thought in my head: One day we are going to run out of cute cloth diaper names.  The good news is that this will be due to the growth of cloth diapers as an industry and the many brands that are out there and those that have yet to be made and named.  The bad news is we will not have enough cute names to go around.

FuzziBunzLogoThe pioneers of cloth diapers had it easy.  Every synonym for “rear end” was available.

The first modern pocket diaper chose the name “Fuzzibunz”

Then the next pocket diapers came along.  bumGenius!, Happy Heineys, Rumparooz, and Smartipants.

Don’t get me wrong, not all cloth diapers reference the booty.  Some are just (more…)

#Operationfluffy back on track for The Ellen Show?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 by by

ellenbuttonIf you remember, we launched a Twitter, blog, and video campaign called #operationfluffy to convince The Ellen Show to feature modern cloth diapers on the show.  The campaign had hundreds of people involved who tweeted and taped their babies dancing for our You Tube video of babies in cloth.

Then I got word from a diaper maker who was told they would be on The Mother’s Day show.  I was happy and sad.  I was happy to see cloth diapers on the show but sad only one type and brand would be presented.
