Monday: Don’t be a Frumpy Mom!

Monday, August 20th, 2012 by by

Sometimes I see women without children – makeup perfectly applied, hair expertly styled, manicured toes, dressed stylishly with coordinating accessories – and I envy them. I remember when I was once stylish and well put together, but being a ‘well put together mom’ feels like an oxymoron now. If I can get out the door with my baby wearing something clean and my own teeth brushed, I feel like I’ve accomplished something.

Much as I want to spend an hour (perhaps two?) getting ready each morning and look impeccable when I leave my home, with a baby, it’s really not possible – not to mention a bout of morning sickness to add to my woes.

That DOES NOT mean that I, NOR YOU, need to be a frumpy mom.

Frumpy Momˈfrəm-pē ˈməm: Someone who uses the excuse of being a busy mother to justify lazy and poorly put together outfits. Some examples include ‘mom jeans,’ sweats with flip flops, and the eternal ponytail.

Fortunately, keeping yourself away from being a frumpy mom doesn’t have to take hours to do! In fact, while you may never be quite as stylish and fashionable as you were as a single 20′s something, you CAN maintain style without compromising your limited time. (more…)

Fashion Formula: How to Put Outfits Together

Featured Contributor: Jodie from Jodie Noted

This formula I’m about to share with you, which I’ve dubbed “The Fashion Formula,” I learned from my many hours of watching What Not To Wear. It’s a favorite show of mine and has taught me much about how to dress for my age, my body type, and my lifestyle. Let me tell you – this formula is golden. You won’t believe how easy it will make your life, from getting dressed every day to shopping for clothes to picking out accessories.  A sincere confession: that I don’t know much about fashion or clothes or style. Everything I know has been learned through others via TV, magazines, and totally stylish friends. I do not claim to be an expert. I simply find this information fun and quite helpful as I rummage through my closet each morning. I hope you will enjoy it as well.

Let’s break it down. Your outfit should consist of three main pieces. (more…)

Your Winter Wardrobe with a Splash of Color

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 by by

I love that March is around the corner! Mother Nature is awaiting to splash our world with color as the first buds of green appear, giving us a glimpse of hope for warmth.  Usually, by the end of February, I get so tired of my dark and dull wardrobe.  I am ready to embrace some sunshine, literally and figuratively.  Don’t you love that giddy feeling you get when you walk into the department and the displays are decked out for Spring?

Since Winter is still lingering around, here is a fun way to color this season:

  • Add a pop of color with your accessories: jewelry, hand bag, nail polish, belt, scarf.
  • A perky cardigan.
  • It may be too early for sandals, but some fun springy flats will energize your wardrobe.
  • A crisp white shirt with ruffles.
  • Springy sleeveless top with a cardigan over it to keep you warm.
  • A light flirty skirt to go with your wintery top.

Come away with me as we dream of Spring! (more…)

What We Have Here is a Failure to Coordinate

Thursday, October 6th, 2011 by by

I bemoaned the fact that there simply are NO decent clothing options currently available in the mainstream retail marketplace for regular, everyday people like me.  This claim can be supported with cold, hard fact now that I have spent the last few days trying to find a few new pieces to add to my wardrobe.

Now, I’ve made it clear on this blog that I am by no means a fashionista, and that I am hopelessly inept at dressing myself, but it’s not like I’m walking around in pumpkin printed knit vests and sweatshirts that proclaim me “#1 mom.”  Now that I’ve lost my baby weight, I figured that perhaps I could stretch a bit and try to be ever so slightly more experimental with my look.

I spent a few hours on the internet looking at other people’s “What I Wore” posts  and scrupulously studied  Jessica Quirk’s website, and I thought, “I have a decent figure.  I have a decent budget.  How hard can this be?”  I’ll tell you what.  It’s hard.  REALLY, REALLY HARD.

First of all, as I mentioned previously, fall trends are not on my side….or anyone else’s that I can see.  And, as I also suspected, Michael Kors is indeed behind some of this madness:

It’s a table runner with a v-neck AND belt!  Who wouldn’t look awesome in that?
Let’s not even talk about that furry vest, shall we?

I used to be Hot….

Circa 2007

And now I am a Mom. There are days I take off my PJ’s, take a shower, then put my PJ’s back on; others where I put on jeans and a plain shirt; and the rare day where I put on “nice” clothes and leave the house.  I am not saying being hot and being a mom are mutually exclusive. I just haven’t been able to balance keeping up appearances and working from home/raising kids/doing housework.

My husband often reminds me of how much he wishes I had my short hair again, or that he loves it when my eye shadow is “darker” and cooler. And so do I, but keeping a hair style can be pricey and putting on my full face is time consuming!

I also used to take the time to get a new piercing or new tattoo every once in a while. At one point I had my nose, tongue, lip, navel, and……. ahem…. pierced. I have 4 tattoos, and all but one are Smashing Pumpkins related. I would love more tattoos, but again, they are expensive and time consuming. Plus I am hoping to find an AMAZING artist to do my half sleeve in the future.

Rockin’ no makeup and a pony tail.

Blogging, kids, and keeping house consume my entire life (not in that order). I know I need to take better care of myself and make time for my outside interests or hobbies. My husband would appreciate it, and it would make me feel better. I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight and fitting back into my skinny size 2′s (thank you breastfeeding – I know it had nothing to do with diet or exercise since I have done neither), so my body deserves a little accentuation.

I have ordered a new pair of specs (eyeglasses are my favorite accessory) and will be getting a hair cut today! I have no idea what I am going to do with it. I have an insane high end make up collection but stick to the basic colors, so I think I should get back into that. Sephora called and said they missed me and my money.

How do you juggle keeping up with fashion/hair/makeup and your mommy duties?

A Bad Case of Stripes

Thursday, December 30th, 2010 by by

I hate getting dressed.  It’s no secret. I am just not good at it.  Some people effortlessly drift into their closets and assemble outfits that suit both their bodies and the occasion.  I can do neither.

My still post-partum, over 40 body has stumped me.  It can’t seem to decide what it wants to be.  One day I’ll look in the mirror and think, “I can live with this,” and later that same day it’s as if someone has switched my mirror out with one of those circus side-show models that morphs your body into a mass of wideness and awkward angles.

I’ll leave the house thinking that I look pretty good, and later catch myself in a store window and think, “Ugh”.  That’s all.  Just, “Ugh.”

Shopping is a nightmare.  Time and time again I will leave a store confident that I have purchased wisely.  I will be certain that the contents of my bag will look just as good on me at home as they did in the store.  And time and time again I will come home and (more…)
