The other day I stumbled across this blog post, Almost Free Diapers - How to diaper your baby when you can’t afford disposable diapers or cloth diapers. I totally loved this post and wanted to share it. Now, when you read it you might feel a little jipped. No, you’re not going to get a big stash of BumGenius diapers by following her advice but it was common sense advice on frugality and making do with what you have. And, it made me feel a little better as a person reading it.
I thought I was the only one who did this. I don’t do this now because I have a gazillion and one diapers stockpiled now, but when my older kids were babies there were times when we did run out of diapers. I used to have some cloth diapers on hand for emergencies like this. They were the old fashioned flat diapers that you pin. But, I have also used old hand towels, tshirts, or other absorbent things from around the house when in a pinch. I didn’t keep diaper pins on hand so I would just take a pair of my older kids’ panties or undies and use them to secure the diaper.
It’s amazing to me how resourceful you can be when you have to be. It just never occurred to me that anyone else would do this. It also seriously makes me reconsider cloth diapering again. I’ve been toying around with the idea anyway. I have so many disposable diapers right now that I will use up what I have first but I had been thinking about buying some of the new fancy cloth diapers. I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that kind of money on them. In order to have enough to really cloth diaper with you would need to invest quite a bit in a diaper stash. But, after reading this post, I think I could start cloth diapering for a whole lot cheaper if I want to.
