Not a Volcano…

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012 by by Kel

…but I’m not sure what to call it, either! I found another idea for a cool experiment, for lack of a better word, and decided on a super-hot afternoon to try it out. Unfortunately, this one did not catch Danny’s attention near as much as I thought it would – but Eric thought it was awesome. (And Andrew slept in his crib for 40 minutes to allow it to happen!!)

It takes a few of your basic volcano ingredients: baking soda and vinegar. Jazz it up with a little food coloring and you’re good to go! (Well – you’ll also need a loaf pan, a small bowl or four, and a medicine dropper.)

Prep is fairly easy. Dump a box of baking soda into a loaf pan and smooth it out a bit – all I really did was shake the pan so it was kind of even. At first, the thrifty part of me balked at the idea of using a whole box of baking soda, but then I realized that those cost all of 50 cents. I can handle that for some inside fun that isn’t a video game or movie! Pour a little bit of vinegar into a bowl (or you could use a muffin tin!), and mix in a few drops of food coloring. (more…)

Make Your Own Bouncy Balls

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012 by by Vicky

I don’t know about your house, but mine is filled with those small rubber bouncy balls. The Older collects them, and it seems like anytime we go to a restaurant with vending machine games, he gets a pocketful of them. I can’t stand him spending money on these things, so I’ve told him no more. He loves them though, so I decided he could have them if we made them ourselves. Setup was pretty easy, and I had all of the supplies here at home.

  • 2 plastic cups (I labeled mine “Borax” and “Ball” so I wouldn’t get confused)
  • Warm water
  • Borax
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • White/school glue
  • Cornstarch
  • Tablespoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Zipper baggie

Lava Lamps

Thursday, June 7th, 2012 by by Kel

There aren’t many crafts that catch Danny’s attention, but now that summer is here and I’m doing more table time with Eric, I’ve been trying to find activities they will both enjoy – or ones I can easily modify and do at two levels at once.

When I saw a craft for lava lamps, I immediately knew it would captivate them both.

As a bonus for this totally not crafty mom, it was super easy to do!

The prep Eric and I did alone, mostly for the potential spill factor. First, we filled a water bottle a little more than halfway with oil. Honestly, after doing it, I should have gone more for 3/4 full – now I know! (more…)

Make Your Own Lava

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 by by jenn0324

Since The Older is still sick and we can’t go out and do anything, I pulled out my science experiments for kids binder that’s full of stuff I’ve collected for days such as this. The Older voted on Make Your Own Lava to start with, so that’s where we began.

First I gathered what we needed. (I love this experiment because it’s done with things 99% of households already have, and there’s very little prep time to it.)

Oil, a clear glass filled 3/4 of the way with water, 1/4 cup oil, table salt, and food coloring. Yup, got that!

First we put 5 drops of red food coloring into the glass, and then The Older poured the 1/4 cup of oil into the water.

After that, we added (more…)

Easy Science Experiment for Kids

Thursday, August 18th, 2011 by by jenn0324

The afternoon of the water balloon day, we decided it was time to set up shop and work on an experiment. I wanted to teach The Older about how different substances create different things entirely, so we got some more balloons together and gathered up the rest of our supplies as well.

The first step was to add baking soda to a plastic bottle (about 2 tablespoons or so). For that I had him use an ice cream scoop (for entertainment purposes we used my pig one), and we used a funnel so he could get the baking soda easily into the bottle.

After that, he carefully (more…)
