I just had my little girl 6 months ago and had my IUD inserted in Feb. I am ovulating right now and have a lot of mucus, more then usual. Is this normal with the IUD? I have the Paragard. Also the mucus has some blood in it and I am still spotting somewhat in between periods. It is getting better then it was last month. Should this resolve over time? Just wondering if this is normal. Thanks!
Completely normal. The IUD works by causing inflammation to the uterine lining so that implantation cannot occur. It does nothing to suppress ovulation, so it's normal to have your regular signs of fertility with the Paraguard. It also causes irritation to the cervix (especially because of the strings hanging through it disrupting it's ability to form a plug during the infertile parts of the cycle). This can mean an increase in CM during the time of fertility, and it can also mean an increase in infertile discharge during the infertile parts of the cycle because the cervical plug is being disrupted by the strings. Irregular spotting and bleeding is also normal, due to the irritated uterine lining and the lack of a cervical plug to prevent the bleeding from coming out.
