Hello Ladies!
I'm dropping in from the July DDC and have a question for anyone that has a copper IUD. I'm not able to ever have hormones again (long story) and so I've been looking at my options for bc after I deliver my son. I'm thinking that a diaphragm or cervical cap would be a bad choice for me as we probably wouldn't ever use it. So I was thinking about the Paragard. We effectively only used condoms for about 3 1/2 years and had no surprises until now haha. My questions for you are:
Do you like using the Paragard? Would you recommend it to someone that cannot use hormonal bc? I had really heavy, crampy periods before I got pregnant and know that Paragard can cause this, have any of you had problems with this? Do you use anything else with the Paragard? Have you had any issues with the Paragard since having it inserted? And anything else you can think of to fill me in on before I make my decision?
Thanks so much ladies!!

Ive not ever actually had the paraguard inserted but i did discuss it with my dr. Definitely talkt o your OB about it bc alot of insurances wont cover it anymore. This is why i didnt get it. Moneys tight as it is and the paraguard has a pretty bill on it with the drs insertion fees and such.
My dr and i were talking non hormonal BC and thatas teh only thing out there that he recomended for me. I was seriously looking at getting it. We are done and we dont want my tubes tied again nor do we want him getting a vasectomy so when it came down to the wire ic ouldnt afford to do the copper iud we had to go with something different.

So if you don't mind me asking what did you decide to go with? My OB has talked to me about doing a tubal ligation because I have a rare syndrome and may not be able to safely carry any more children after this. We are actually really lucky that my pg so far has been so smooth. And because I can't have hormones it makes it all the more difficult to find something that I can use. I'd love to hear more from you about your tubal. I'm pretty sure I don't want to have one but I'd appreciate your input. So if you want to PM me that would be great. Thanks!!

Do you like using the Paragard?
Love it! I wish I had gotten it earlier now! I love the fact you REALLY don't have to worry about it once it's in - apart from regularly checking that it hasn't come out. I heard a lot of bad stories about IUD's in general, so was a bit apprehensive, but I"m glad I got it now
Would you recommend it to someone that cannot use hormonal bc?
Yes! That is the reason I got it to begin with - due to my epilepsy medication I can't use hormonal b/c... and I HATE hormonal b/c anyway, makes me so moody & grumpy & just... blah, not myself! I would certainly recommend to anyone who can't use hormonal b/c, that they talk to their doctor about it.
I had really heavy, crampy periods before I got pregnant and know that Paragard can cause this, have any of you had problems with this?
First period after I got it inserted - OW... Second period after I got it inserted - ow... - Third period after I got it inserted - no problems! just a few niggly AF cramps for the first day of my period
Do you use anything else with the Paragard?
No!!! Part of what i like about it... No need for other forms of contraception. If you wanted you could use condoms with it - but I hate condoms, so the IUD is perfect for me... our choice was down to IUD or condoms... IUD won hands down!
Have you had any issues with the Paragard since having it inserted?
The first month was a bit horrible - spotting on and off, and cramping for the first week or so.... But seriously once my body had adjusted to it, there were no other issues. As I said above, my first couple of periods were more painful, BUT once my body had gotten used to it, it seems to be fine now. Next time you see your OB/midwife, I suggest getting information on the IUD, so you can make an informed decision. Like all forms of b/c, for some people it works & agree's with their bodies - with some people it doesn't
Good luck

I've never used it, but have found
