Full Version: To me it seems sad

It seems sad that I have had to beg for someone to listen to me and help me for 2 years and no one has until my son has gotten to the point where everyone at school walks on eggshells around him, where he meltsdown EVERY day over small things now like glues sticks not winding back down in their tubes....where he says he hates school and tells me he is NEVER happy there...where he makes comments like he wants to cut his ex-best friend up with rusty razor blades and blow up the school..and to where we were yesterday when he hit the school counselor (who I will say is a colleague/friend because I am a counselor in a neighboring school)

She finally called his outside counselor who I had hoped was going to give me a referral last friday but instead told me to wait it out a little longer and that he was simply terrified of his emotions. Now he is pulling strings to get in with a child psychiatrist. And while it breaks my heart that it has come to this point, it would break my heart more if it hadn't.

So here's to hope. Turning a corner...hopefully getting my son the help he needs.

It it really really sad. I hope that the Psy. does well for your son. Does your son recieve any therapies? ABA, OT, ST? Ot has helped so much when it comes to my daughters meltdowns. Keep us posted! I hope you and your son get the help he needs to get things worked out with him.

HUGS!!! I am so sorry that you've had to go through these scary times...!

Is your son on a special diet of any kind? Has he seen a DAN! doctor?
Adriann1973
thank you. I don't even know where to find a DAN doctor around here, Any suggestions?? How do you take gluten and dairy away from a kid who lives on Mac and cheese?? I mean i WILL if it will help him. GAH I am so overwhelmed

I am recovering from wrist surgery only to fall and break my knee and tear my meniscus Monday night. So now I am missing more work, can't walk and dealing with a child who hates himself lately. Something has to give.

Gavin receives ST through his IEP. Can you tell me how OT helps the meltdowns? I am really interested!!

OT works with them on sensory issues. If you have a IEP you can ask for and Eval at the school. My daughter has meltdowns and they have a sensory diet for her to stop them. EX weighted vest, different exersizes and it really helps with her. Before you start him on any diet talk to your dr about it. I am not putting the Diet down its great for some kids but does nothing for others. Research it before you do. I am having allergy testing done on my son before i even consider trying.
Also I have 2 daughters who are close to his age that are going through puberty and according to our Ped its very common anymore for children to start puberty earlier. This could be part of the issue, from what I have been told ASD and Puberty is a whole new problem. I am not looking forward to it.

HUGS!!! I am sorry to hear about you getting hurt i hope you recover quickly.

I have yet to really see OT and/or a diet truly help Kainan. If it is helping, it's not obvious. But, it's not been easy to implement it at home for me. I'm going to try harder but things are soo busy around our house and I haven't made it a big enough priority.
Implementing OT isn't necessarily time consuming but I agree with 3girls1boy that it could help and to ask his Special Educator for those services. They will most likely have an OT evaluate him and have you fill out a questionaire about your son and then determine if he would benefit from OT services.

A DAN! dr is a Defeat Autism Now! doctor. If you go to Generationrescue.com there will be a link regarding DAN! doctors and they will have a search available for your area to see where one would be located in your area. There is also an explanation of what a DAN! doctor is on that site somewhere. Basically, they are doctors who agree to go to special seminars and training about autism. Each doctor specializes in a certain type of treatment.
I can't wait until we get Kainan to his first DAN! appointment in a couple months.

I hope that helps! and I hope you and your son feel better soon!!!
oh, and don't feel like you need to wait for your next IEP meeting to ask about OT services. You can ask any time and they can make an amendment to the IEP when/if necessary :)

I hope that you find some answers and that these people will finally start listening to you..Sometimes it takes a lot to get someone to listen just for a few moments. You just have to keep at it. Don't give up..when you think you can't take anymore..just sit a minute and think about who you are doing it for..it will be worth the fight trust me...i will keep you in my prayers....

hugs

You can search for a DAN doctor online. Just do a web search DAN is defeat autism now. Between our allergist and DAN dr our sons dehaviors have decreased. I think when I looked at the list, each state had at least one DAN dr.

Good luck! I know what you mean about having to push so hard for any help. Emilee was 13 months when I first noticed signs of a delay and I have been pushing ever since then..... we FINALLY got a referral when we switched insurance. Still struggling, but MUCH closer to a DX!
