An ICAN chapter member in New York started this petition after she was able to successfully be supported in breastfeeding immediately after her cesarean while her incisions were being closed. She felt this made a huge positive impact on her experience. Many women have been able to successfully nurse while still in the OR, although many facilities are not openly willing to comply with this. Sign this petition & help immediate breastfeeding after a cesarean become more commonplace.

I was able to bf in recovery but I don't know about bf'ing while they are still closing me up. That only takes 5minutes? And I can bf pretty much right away. I don't see the necessity. I thought with a vaginal birth it was baby to belly then clean up and then some snuggling, bf'ing? So if you are waiting 5-10minutes with a vaginal why can't you wait 5-10minute with a cesarean? Maybe I'm wrong? I have not experienced a vaginal birth.

That's cool actually :) But it'll never happen here. They took Stephanie away for checks when the got her out.....(she was a premmie of course) but at least they put her on my chest for 5 minutes. She was looking around so helplessly and had her fists so tightly closed. I wish i could have touched her that moment. But my arms were outstretched left and right......sad.gif

Some people prefer to let the baby bf right away without being cleaned up first. There's really no reason to have to take the baby away if they are okay, so it's just personal preference and I think you generally have to request it in a hospital birth.

I think it would be great if they made a it a routine to encourage bonding in surgical births.

I don't think I could have physically BF right then. I couldn't even in recovery because I was so shaky all three times.

I don't think I would have been able to BF either - I got the shakes badly, and I'm not sure I would have wanted to BF while laying on the OR table. But, I think it should be up to the mom. The hospital that I had both boys at don't allow you to BF until you're out of recovery. I wasn't able to see them at all until I was settled into my permanent room. It's the main complaint that I have about both.

Thanks Michelle!

Personally I would rather baby cleaned off right away so I can lavish him with kisses. But that's just me and my personal preference. I'm sure everyone will have their own personal views on that.

I would not have been able to either because I had the shakes so bad I could not hold her. I don't think I would have been successful at it laying flat on my back either.

I am like you girls the medicine they gave me made me sooo shaky that they could barely get my blood pressure let alone me hold and nurse the baby. I think it was about a hour afterwards that I nursed her then she nursed pretty much through the night.

I don't think I'd mind the gunk so much. laugh.gif I guess they could help you wipe the baby down.

I also probably wouldn't have been able to BF because I was unable to breathe and then puked after she was out, but even if you can't BF, it would be great if they let you interact more with the baby right away. I definitely would have enjoyed the birth more if I felt like a part of it, kwim?
