Do you think it's possible to prevent the necessity of a cesarean by sleeping certain ways or doing something different during your pregnancy?

(we're talking about necessary cesarean deliveries)

In my case Cameron was born with the cord wrapped tightly around his neck twice. He was in distress and it was urgent. I can't help but wonder if he had moved around in there differently. Maybe by me sleeping a different way. Maybe he wouldn't have gotten so tangled? I'm not down about it or anything I just wonder if there's an old wives tale on how to have a good delivery. Like sleeping standing up lol

yes i think a lot of times it is. like for instance a breech baby and an OB who just schedules a c-section without trying anything like the Webster Technique, external version or at-home techniques. getting chiropractic adjustments done during pregnancy can totally help out with baby's positioning and make labor easier. i'm convinced that my c-section could have been avoided if i'd done a number of things differently and i totally "what-if" myself to death. *sigh*

Maybe in some cases it would be possible. But not all.

For example my problem is my pelvis -- my 5lb baby got stuck completely and had to be dug out during my emergency c/s -- so I don't have the capability to deliver a baby naturally and nothing I do will change that

^ exactly! And really how could I have known he would get so tangled in his cord? I wouldn't have been able to do anything to prevent mine. And with my ERC it was even more medically necessary than with my first so it's not even a question.

I had a tangled cord child too. Not only was it causing distress because the cord was getting compressed when I pushed but he was so tangled he was stuck, could move down at all. The only way for him to come out vaginally would have been to cut his cord while he was still up there. I don't think there is anything I could have done, that's never occured to me. He was just way too active I guess! LOL and he's still that way!

I think in some cases it could be preventable, like breech babies. But how were you to know that his cord would get wrapped? I guess it could be possible about sleeping a different way, but who's to know for sure blush.gif

Mine was more of an elective c-section, so yes it could have been prevented. But DH, my dr. and I felt it was best. One of our twins died from twin to twin transfusion syndrome, and he remained in there until delivery. My surviving son had been through SO MUCH distress during my pregnancy, that I didn't want anything wrong to happen during a vaginal delivery. (His HR dropping, him getting stuck, cord wrapping, etc.) I had gone through so much that I didn't want to risk anything else. Also, I did not think I could have handled vaginally delivering my son who passed away.

So yes, c-sections can sometimes be prevented, but we have to choose what is best for us and our babies grin.gif

I suppose its possible. Although I don't think there was anything I could have done. Both girls were Frank Breech and they figure its because my uterus is tilted. Not much I can do about that smile.gif

I really like your attitude on this. You did the right thing for you and I did the right thing for me. We all look out for what's best for us in our own situations. And look how different our situations have been in this thread already.

I think my uterus is slightly torqued or tilted, and that caused my daughter to have her head turned the wrong way. I know that I have problems in my pelvic area that probably contributed to my uterus being that way, and that chiropractic techniques before and during pregnancy can help that, so in that sense my c-section could have been prevented.

In general I think it depends. When my mom was in labor with me, the cord was around my neck and they picked it up and had her move into certain positions to get it to move. But, in that situation the cord was probably less tied up than what happened to other women here.

I think it's really interesting that midwives have a much, much lower c-section rate (it varies, but I think I've seen it as low as less than 5%). Now I'm sure some of that is attributed to high risk cases being transferred, and eliminating all of the interventions that doctors use that often lead to a c-section, but they will also normally spend an hour with you at your prenatal visits, and talk about exercise and nutrition and all kinds of things to help facilitate an easier vaginal birth. I bet that they prevent many problems that could lead to c-sections that doctors don't even focus on in their 5 minute visits.

I had an OB for the first and a midwife for the second.

Sometimes it just doesn't matter

I also did Chiro but it didn't help at all.

Not in mine. The sickness i've been through is 1:10,000 in a galloping form (as mine was)....that's pretty rare and not preventable because it has to do with mutated inheritable genes..... dry.gif

I definitely think it depends on the situation. I don't think all csections are preventable. There's no way to know if the cord is going to be wrapped around the babies neck. How could you change that during pregnancy? You really can't, ya know?

I had a very difficult pregnancy with pregnancy induces hypertension. My bp was really high at times. My baby was also measuring very big. He measured at almost 10 lbs at 35 weeks. My doctors asked me how i felt about having a csection. I was fine with it. I trusted my docs with my life and knew that was the best decision for my health and the health of my baby. I honestly don't think I could've tolerated a vaginal delivery with how high my bp was.
