I think I figured out a way!! I did use a plug in, but it's a free one.

Here is what I came up with:

Well it's not perfect yet, but I'm getting there. Unfortunatly, photobucket degrades it... It looks much better when in psp...

If I upload it as a png files, the glass effect looks better:

Edited to add:

Look at this post for a better way to do it:

It's Almathera, the bewel option... I will try to find it online again if anyone is interested.
I'm still fiddling with it, hopefully I can get it to look even more like yours! I will post how I did after but it's real easy. smile.gif

Ok, first you need to download the almathera plug in from here (free):

http://www.mways.co.uk/prog/plugin.php

To make the glass text that I got so far (I'm sure it can be improved some more):

1) Write your text as a vector choosing the color you want it to be. I used a larger font size.

2) Convert your layer to a raster layer (Layers sub menu)

3) Using the magic wand click on one of the letters, it should select them all

4) Go to effects, plug in, beveller. You can play around with the settings, but what I like so far is:

Thickness:11
Lighting: 45
Transparency: 0
Smooth: 5

5) Then in the layers toolbox, change the blending option from normal to multiply. Your text should now be transparent.

Hope this work for someone else. Sorry I don't know how to do a screenshot so I can't add them...

It's a great start!! smile.gif

Sorry I can't do a screenshot to show you... The blending option is in the layer palette to the right of your screen, under materials. You would go to the Raster that has your glass text on, to the right of that, you will see the eye, then 100%, then it says Normal. Click on that, a drop menu will appear and you can select multiply.

If your Layer Palette is not on, you can turn it on by pressing F8.

Hope this help.

Ok, I found a way to make it look more glassy cheer.gif :

After all the steps I mentionned earlier, I do play with the curves editor under adjust brighness and contrast.
My curve looks somewhat similar to Rachel's in the ps tutorial. I will ask dh to help me figure out how to do a screenshots so I can share my settings on that and to do images on the rest too..

I have also adjusted the settings in step 4:

4) Go to effects, plug in, beveller. You can play around with the settings, but what I like so far is:

Thickness:9
Lighting: 45
Transparency: 0
Smooth: 2

But I guess it will depend on the font used...
Sondra
ok I found the blending options...how's this?

I didn't put anythin in the background though, but I did test it and it is transparent.

OH yeah, btw to do screen shots, hit the prnt scrn (usually in the upper right corner somewhere) button on ur keyboard and it'll copy the entire screen view and just paste it and resize in whatever program...(sorry i was gonna tell ya earlier n forgot)

it doesn't look squared out like yours though, its really rounded...how did yuo get it to look flat?

ETA: I can't find these curve settings you're talkin about is it just on PSP X or am I just not looking hard enough??? (I have v. 9.01)
Sondra
nvm i found it! DURRR!

OK how's this::

it's really light, is it better to use a darker color for that?

Great job on the Sondra one. That one is lighter but I see the glassy look to it, I woudn't change the font color but play around with the curve settings to make it a bit darker.

Thanks for the tip on print screen. I knew it was that, but call me silly, my print screen is like the second thing under another one on the button and for the life of me I can't figure out what to press to get to it.

I tried a diff font and this is what I got. Still really light, I messed around w/the curves and thats the only was I think it looks glassy is if it's really light like that. But it does look more squared.

Ok, I have been playing around with it, and you are right it's a difficult color to work from. My settings for other colors didn't work. I can only get a lighter or darker look, but never the shade I want. And it doesn't look so glassy in light.

Here is what I came up with:

The setting for light, then dark:

Sorry I coudn't come up with anything better.

Did you put them in your psp plug in folders? Maybe restart your computer if you don't see them right away. Here is a screenshot of where you find it:

Oh... Sorry I didn't understand. Probably because your text was still vector? To be able to use the plugins it has to be a raster or a floating selection...

Did you convert your text to a raster layer and then select it with the magic wand? Plug ins can't be used with vector text.

Ok, I found (from someone else) an even easier and nicer way to do glass text using the Eye Candy plug ins. There is a free limited version (doesn't have all of the filters, but it does have glass) of that plug in here:

http://www.geocities.com/why2kspace/

I downloaded it and it works great.

1) Write your text as a vector choosing the color you want it to be.

2) Convert your layer to a raster layer (Layers sub menu)

3) Using the magic wand click on one of the letters, it should select them all

4) Go to effects, plugsin, eye candy 3.1 or 4, glass. You will get a preview screen, just play around with the settings since it all depends on the font and color you are using.

5) If you want a stroke around the text, do it now (same way as in the tut for regular text). Deselect your glass text. Just type your text again using the text tool. Right click on it, choose properties. Change color of stroke and fill to white and increase stroke width to a larger number (5-8 depending on how big your font is). Add a drop shadow. Move that layer to the back of the glass text, and position it so it looks nice. Then merge the glass layer with the white stroke layer.

5) Then in the layers toolbox, change the blending option for that layer from normal to multiply. Your text should now be transparent. Sometimes I also like the look of luminance or hard light. Once again in depends on the color of the glass text and what is in the background of it.

I will do a proper tut with screenshots later.

Thank you soooo much for that!
kimbytx
After merging my text and white stroke and then adding multiply to those merged layers, it really darkened up the drop shadow and did not seem to make a huge difference on the text. I did just what you said.

I tried it not merging the layers, adding a duplicate layer over the text and using multiply or hard light over the text and it really brightened it up and made it more vibrant. I use that effect over pics all the time but never thought of doing it over glass text...thanks

How did you merge your layers? I noticed if I did merge down, then the drop shadow makes the letters darker, but if I say merge visible then it doesn't... Does that make a difference for you?

I'm not sure I understand what you did. You duplicated the glass layer itself and used multiply on that but kept the other glass layer at normal?
kimbytx
I just found this topic again. I swear I lost it for awhile. It worked fine with the merge visible. I just did my text in eye candy like I always do then did the multiply and merged it. What I did when playing around was yes duplicate the text and on the layer above it did a hard light and it brightened it up differently. I use that effect with soft light over my pictures and then adjust the opacity and it makes the photos look good.
