I have the copper IUD, my GYN said that increased cramps (during my cycle) and heavier flow should be okay after about 3 months. My cycle used to be 4 days and now it is seven. I've the IUD over a year and the paid is a lot worse. I have severe cramps, a pain in my right side that shoots down into my thigh, and a very bad backache. I can't take this every month. What should I do? I can't use hormonal BC's. I'm so confused!

Is your pain/cramps only during your cycle or all the time?? Did you have this kind of period when you weren't using b/c?? I would say that if you didn't start getting this kind of pain before then it's most likely related to the IUD but if you had it before the IUD then it's unfortunately just how your body is.
Severe cramps and heavy bleeding are also a sign of endometriosis. Could also be a reason why your in pain during AF.
Either way, I would call your dr.

Sorry to hear that! Increased cramping and heavier bleeding are both side effects associated with the Copper IUD, so it very well could be that. Some women experience it, and some don't.

That has a lot of risks too, just be sure to do your homework about Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome before you make up your mind.

I've never heard of that. I definately need to do my homework. I'm also gonna have my doc check for endometriosis. I looked up the symptoms and I have them all. I'll keep you all posted.

I had my copper IUD for 3 yrs when i had it taken out. My period was always heavey and the cramps were so bad . I think your dr was wrong cuz that happens with the copper IUD. the reason i had mine taken out was because i was getting repeated infections and I couldn't take it anymore. I had mine out 2 yrs ago and the cramps stopped and I am back to 3-4 days instead of 7. Good luck and i hope yours starts working out better for you !

What kind of BC do you use now? Is it hormonal?
