I know that breastfeeding lengthens the time after birth before you start menstrating again but I've also read that before you start, an egg can still drop or when you finally do start again, your first may be a dud. It's got me worried. Even though the chances are slim, I'm not ready to have another baby, and don't want to take the risk. Has anyone heard of birth control that I can be on while breastfeeding so it won't affect the baby?

Your chance of pregnancy is less than 2% ONLY if the following criteria are met:
1. Baby gets all nutrition from the breast
2. Baby is under 6 months of age
3. Mom has had no bleeding past 56 days post partum

If you have any bleeding, then your fertility might be returning. If baby starts getting formula or solids, your fertility can return. After 6 months, your fertility is more likely to return. The forms of BC that don't affect babies AT ALL (like zero) are modern Natural Family Planning methods, the Fertility Awareness Method, or barrier methods.

You can use an IUD, minipill (don't recommend), depo (also don't recommend), barrier methods (condoms, diaphragm), spermicide, and NFP/FAM.
