No, he didn't. And actually, I looked at the letter, it's dated Monday, October 20th. He interviewed the morning of Friday the 17th...
So that whole "we can't make a definite decision" until he talked to the other guy was obviously not accurate.
I decided to take him dinner on campus since he hadn't had any lunch and has a study group until later. I brought the letter for him, and a "just because" card. He looked disappointed, but he's not the type to fixate on things like that. He'll just move on to the next thing.
