Brand new to the site (just signed up tonight!). I was also researching Metformin & pregnancy.

I am 21wks pregnant, found out we were expecting around 5wks pregnant (my period was 4wks late, but I'd ovulated 3wks late, I guess. our original EDD was changed after an u/s)& my family dr immediately took me off the Metformin, which I had only been on for 3 months. From what I had read about Metformin, I assumed it hadn't been proven safe to take during pregnancy, therefore my dr discontinuing my use. My midwife never said I should continue taking it or anything, I didn't think anything of it until yesterday. We had a WIC appt and saw the breastfeeding counselor and she said I should have continued Metformin throughout my pregnancy because PCOS can cause low milk supply and cause me to be unable to breastfeed. I have an appt w/my midwife in a week and plan to discuss things w/her then.
My midwife tested me for GD around 9wks since I was just diagnosed w/PCOS earlier this year and "borderline diabetic" and my mother was diagnosed as being diabetic a few yrs ago after having GD during her pregnancy w/me over 20yrs ago. My test for GD was normal & the 3hr but I will be retested at 28wks, GD can show up later in pregnancy I've heard.
SO, this doesn't really answer any questions but a lactation specialist/breastfeeding consultant did encourage taking Metformin throughout pregnancy to help w/milk production, your breast need it during the entire pregnancy to get you ready for it, she said. She is NOT a medical professional however, at least I don't guess?? She may be a breastfeeding counselor but that doesn't mean she was a nurse or anything, I have gotten not-so-great advice from the former WIC counselor...so their word isn't golden.
I think your doctor(s) should decide what medicines you continue with and for how long, they're the specialist..it's their job to know.
