Ahhh... finally getting around to writing this! It's been a long week.

Ben was born Thursday, December 1st. We got up at around 3 a.m. (after getting no sleep - lol) to get ready and check in at the hospital by 5:15. The c-section was supposed to be at 7:15, but an emergency with twins bumped us. He wasn't actually born until 8:42 a.m. Anyway, the i.v. was terrible. I have no veins! :( I still have a very large NASTY bruise on my arm from the failed 1st attempt. Then - oh my gosh! - the catheter! They were supposed to do that after I got the spinal, but because of the bump in the O.R. schedule, they did it before I went in. NOT FUN! The spinal was very painful, but manageable. The problem is that it didn't take, so he had to give me something (don't know what) by i.v. to knock me out. It wasn't like "general" anesthesia with the throat tube and all that, but I was definitely out of it. I missed the whole birth. What I most wanted to see was the look on dh's face when he saw the baby. I vaguely remember hearing Ben cry, but that's it.

Dh said that the anesthesiologist said something like "here's the baby" or whatever. He stood up to look, but instead saw me gutted like a fish. What he meant was that she had the baby's head and was popping it out. He thought the baby had actually been born. LOL! Oh well. He came out kicking and screaming at 8 lbs, 6 oz. He was 20 and 1/2 inches and had a 14 inch head circumference. After the birth, my temperature dropped to around 94 degrees. They had to put me under a vacuum blanket for 2 hours to warm me back up. It was kinda weird.

You may recall that the doc was worried a while back, because I started having signs of pre-term labor around 31 weeks or so. Oddly enough, I never progressed to active labor. Turns out, I never would have. I had a complication that was actually a blessing in disguise. The doc said that Ben was stuck just slightly off center in my pelvis and trying to come out at an angle. I would have ended up with a c-section no matter what. Because of that, he's got some head, jaw, and foot deformities, BUT I was able to carry him to term. Thatís the important part. We've got an appointment Thursday to start seeing a physical therapist. He should be just fine. They said the worst that could happen is that he'll wear special shoes for a while or something like that. We'll have to wait and see what they think of his jaw. He might also have a hemangioma tumor on the tip of his nose, but it could take up to a year to know for sure. Those usually go away on their own, so I'm not worried about it.

With a combination of the anesthesia not taking, and my losing a lot of blood (got 5 bags of saline/pitocin solution), I REEEEEEEEEALLY swelled up after the surgery. My feet were so big that I was walking with flat feet and my toes didn't touch the floor. Ew! Below is a swollen picture of the new family just after the 2 hour blanket thing. Itís funny Ė I was so out of it that I donít remember that picture. LOL! There's also one of Ben on day 6 and one of me and Ben on day 3.
