Vitamin D

I was told to take 1,000 vitamin d3 but today they told me to up it to 5,000. Anyone else taking this much? They told me to get Vitamin d3. They told me to research and take as much as I felt was best. Too bad I'm clueless.

1000 i.u. Is the normal for anyone pregnant or not. But 5000 is not uncommon either. You are not over doing it unless you go over 50,000 a week.

Re: Vitamin D

It's hard to overdose on Vitamin D. The research on it is mixed, though. There were a couple of studies that made it look like the cure for all our problems, and they started pushing supplements like crazy, but subsequent studies have not found that the supplements do much or are needed. I wouldn't worry about it. It's not folic acid.

I don't take D vitamin supplements, but I do try to get out in the sunshine whenever I can. Moderate sun (not enough to tan or burn) will give your body all the D it needs!

Here's a recent NYT article on D3 and calcium. It seems the experts have weighed in and have new recommendations, they are lot more anti-supplement than a few years ago. They've also lowered the blood level of D3 that they consider "trigger" for requiring supplementation.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/25/he...=me&ref=health

The report summary from the Institute of Medicine:

Report Brief - Institute of Medicine

Their recommended upper level intake is now 4,000 IU of D3 per day. That's less than what the doctors told you to take, Ashley. And there's D3 in most dairy products as well as in sunlight. I might question them about this if I were you. The extra D3 won't hurt you, but it might be a waste of money.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll stick to the 1000 iu I've been taking, there is a little extra in both my prenatal and my calcium supplement, and I'll try to be better about getting dairy. Those supplements are expensive.

I've never heard of this. My doctor just wants me to stick to the prenatals and hasn't recommended any other supplements.
