Stupid Thrush!!!!
I don't know if many of you remember, but I suffered BADLY with thrush for about two months when I was breastfeeding Kaylee. Did the nystatin, gentian violet, all purpose nipple ointment and then FINALLY somebody prescribed me the prescription pills you can get. Well after about a week of them it went away!... Two weeks later, it started up again. At that point I had already started to wean Kaylee, and by the time it was starting to be really painful again, she was done nursing. No more pain.

I was wondering all this time if the thrush was just festering in there waiting for my milk to come back in again, so when I was at my pre-admission appointment at the hospital today I asked the health nurse and she said YES!!! :smackshead: I'm glad I asked because she told me to start the acidophilus pills again and that should keep it under control (they never did squat before!), but I am freaking out about it now!!!!

Everybody knows how much it hurts to breastfeed the first few weeks to begin with, and if I have to deal with thrush on top of that I don't know if I'm going to be able to do it! I used to dread the three hour mark with Kaylee because I knew she would be nursing again, and this will be 100x worse because newborns can just nurse all ****** day!

I'm very upset about it and it hasn't even started yet :(

... I guess I just wanted to rant. Thanks for listening!

Re: Stupid Thrush!!!!
Were you on any antibiotics before the thrush started? Thrush is usually caused by taking antibiotics. I hope it's not as bad this time, I would just be careful with antibiotics because it can be a cycle taking them to make it go away but it comes back. Also be sure to treat the baby too because he will transfer it back and forth.

Re: Stupid Thrush!!!!
Do they have any bfeeding specialists in the area? I had to drive quite a long way to see one, but found it soooo worth it. If at all possible I would try to get in to see one (they are doctors as well as lactation consultants).

I found the one I saw much more knowledgable about bfeeding issues and the medications, and she was NOT hesitant at all to prescribe me what I needed. My family dr, on the other hand, refused to prescribe me anything and insisted it was normal.

I would call the health office or whatever and ask if there are any specialists.

Good luck!!!

Re: Stupid Thrush!!!!
One week on diflucan (if that's what you took) migt not have been enough to get rid of it completely. Here in the states they often do a loading dose then a full two week treatment. Most ob's don't know this. But he lc's do. My on took the lead of the lc on this issue and that's what got rid of it for me. Definitely go crazy with the probiotics on it. I'm talking the mega doses. Not the ones that are in the low millions. You can't take too many probiotics. And the ones in yogurt usually are filled with sugar which defeats the whole purpose.

I agree with the probiotics. I took 4 a day and eventually got it cleared up. I went to 1 a day as maintenance and even now if I stop for too long my breasts start hurting and I know I've got to start them again.
