Kindergarden.....seriously?!?!

A is in 4k and will be entering kindergarten in fall. So we got a list of "expected knowledge" for the start of the year.
It is RIDICULOUS!!
It includes: know grade level high frequency words (there's a list of about 25), recognize and identity basic punctuation, use phonetic awareness to spell, write simple sentences, know and write their full name, address, phone number, tell time to the hour, interpret simple graphs, understand calender concepts......the list goes on.
Is it just me or are things getting nuts? These kids are only 5!
I'm just shocked with this list.

That's WAY more than my district expects. Here's their list...

-know & recognize the alphabet
-know the basic letter sounds
-know & count to 10
-write own name, first & last
-be able to tie their shoes

a couple more items, but that's about it. I find it too simple for kindergarten. M is finishing kindergarten and is only one of a couple kids reading at a second grade level. They spent most of the year going over phonetic sounds of all 26 letters. A bit slow paced for M. Also they had to count to 110 by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's. They've done addition and subtraction, simple geometry, fractions, telling time, etc. Stuff we did in first grade.

And honestly, if my district had your district's requirements for kindergarten, I wouldn't even be considering sending K to kindergarten in the fall.

David is finishing kindergarten right now and that sounds about right. You will be surprised how much they learn and can do by the end of kindergarten.

Oh I missed where you said start of the year. Those are all end of the year goals here.

That does sound like a high requirement for first starting Kindergarten. I did substitute teaching and did a lot in Kindergarten and that's usually stuff they learn during the year so I wouldn't be worried about it.

That does seem like a lot to know at the beginning of the year. The recommended requirements here are not that extreme.

That's the beginning? What do they teach them during the year? That's what our kids come out knowing at the end of a two year kindergarten program.

Yeah, definitely sounds more like end of the year goals, not beginning of the year.
