Massage, Chiropractor, and Hair Color

I am deciding which of my upcoming appointments I need to cancel.

I am supposed to get my hair colored in a couple weeks. I have read mixed things on hair coloring in the first trimester. The salon I go to uses all Aveda products which are naturally derived, but I am leaning towards not risking it.

At the end of the month I have my monthly massage scheduled, but again, I have read mixed things on whether first trimester massages are safe. I love my therapist, but I don't want to put the baby at risk with any toxins that are released.

Then every couple of months I see my chiropractor. He says it's fine and beneficial to get it during pregnancy, but I would like some second opinions before I go ahead with it.

Thanks ladies!

I waited to get my hair done until a few days before I had Luke may 5, he was born may 7th lol. With massage, I dont think it owuld hurt the bby, but I would just let my hubby rub my back, esp since I cant even lay down - on my tummy anyways. Im baised on the chiropracter thing, not for other ppl but for myself. I wont let a chiro touch me wit ha 10ft pole, I had one pop something once and I couldnt move for like a week, not well anyways. I wouldnt let anyone fiddle with my bones lol.

Many salons request that you are out of your first trimester before you get a massage. When you finally get one, make sure you ask for a prenatal massage (they feel so good!) as opposed to a regular one and make sure the person doing it is trained in a prenatal massage.

As far as hair goes, I've read mixed things about it. I rule on the side of caution and wait until I'm out of the first trimester before I go in (in fact, I got my hair darkened right before we started our "lucky cycle" so that if I did get pregnant, I could make it the 13 weeks between colors!).

Chiropractor -- don't know. Ask your doctor first.

I've heard mixed things about hair color and massages, but I've heard that chiropractors can actually help with back pain during pregnancy!

I'm not coloring my hair or getting massages right now. I will indulge in a couple massages down the line, but I'm gonna wait til after baby to color.

I'd like to think the chiro would be fairly safe, if you truly need it. Me personally, I'd try to wait it out, til the 2nd tri.

I'd wait on the hair color, I'd get a massage as long as the therapist is trained in prenatal and GO to the chiropractor... your back will thank you later on down the pregnancy road :)

Thanks for the advice ladies. I am definitely going to reschedule the coloring part of my hair appointment. Better to be safe :)

I'm leaning towards putting off the massage until December. My plan lets me put it on hold for pregnancy and then I can decide later when/if to restart it.

I have a gift certificate to a massage place, and I'm glad I just read this thread! I'll wait too!

I never had my hair colored and I've never been to a chiro. I'd say just cancel until you can talk to your OB and see what they say!

I'd put off the hair color (even "naturally derived" compounds can be unhealthy) because its really not necessary. I'd go for the massage in a heartbeat but if it were a choice between getting it now or getting it later I'd totally wait until later. I don't think I could properly relax with the nausea I have right now and I know I'd benefit from it a lot more later. I don't use chiropractors but I know tons of mommy friends who do and who go to them throughout their pregnancies. Just make sure to tell your therapist about your pregnancy. They should be able to tell you better than anyone whether or not its safe. An OB would just be guessing.

Re: Massage, Chiropractor, and Hair Color

So, I read this and freaked out since I have a massage coming up on Sunday. So, of course, I ran to the phone and called the doctor (I'm pretty sure they are going to drop me as a patient if I keep calling with my neurotic questions).

Anyways, the doctor said, that massages are perfectly fine during all stages of pregnancy. She just said to make sure you have someone who is licensed in prenatal massage and make sure they know you are pregnant.

So, I called the place I'm getting my massage, to ensure all is ok. The therapist is licensed in prenatal massage. So, I'm going for it. I know the doctor would not tell me something was safe if it was not.
