Here's a recent NYT article on D3 and calcium. It seems the experts have weighed in and have new recommendations, they are lot more anti-supplement than a few years ago. They've also lowered the blood level of D3 that they consider "trigger" for requiring supplementation.

Their recommended upper level intake is now 4,000 IU of D3 per day. That's less than what the doctors told you to take, Ashley. And there's D3 in most dairy products as well as in sunlight. I might question them about this if I were you. The extra D3 won't hurt you, but it might be a waste of money.
