A CPM is an independent practitioner who is certified by the NARM. NARM requires (amongst other things) training in and out of hospital setting. The NARM certification includes verification of knowledge and skills, there is a written exam and a skills assessment.

A CNM has completed nursing school and a program of study accredited by the ACNM. Some states require a Master's degree for a CNM to practice. It can take between 3-6 years to become a CNM.

I think what it comes down to is what your state laws are, and if you are looking for health insurance reimbursement, what your insurance will cover as well.
