I've learned with family (IL's or my own) a person who doesn't make an effort for your family definitely isn't worth you making an effort for them. With DS#1 we catered to everyone the way they wanted, if they whined about seeing him we took him to see them. Now having 3 kids my feelings are its much easier for those "people" to see us instead of lugging 3 kids to them so if they can't do that for whatever excuse they use then that's their loss not ours.
Don't neglect the kids, they are innocent but do not go out of your way to act like a saint to her.
