I haven't had this LO yet, but my second daughter was born a a freestanding birth center. When I brought her in for a checkup at 12 hours old, everyone in the office was coming to look at her like she was a circus freak or something. They had never seen a baby that young in the office, and the pediatric NP there had the same attitude that your pediatrician had, which surprised me.
Needless to say, we eventually changed pediatricians, and now my 8-year-old daughter sees a pediatric NP who was one of my professors and is totally awesome. When I told her that I was planning a home birth for this baby, she said she will even come out to our house for the first visit if the baby is born on a weekend or one of the days that she is not usually in the office. I just need to email her when the baby is born. I'm totally stoked that my baby might get her first check up at home!
