I agree with the above advice. I have had 2 daughters with a tongue-tie and my first DD's wasn't caught until she was a few days old and she did a lot of damage to my nipples.
I also don't understand why you couldn't start using the nipple shield? I have never heard that you have to wait for your milk to come in to use one. I used one starting on day 2 (with the DD with a tongue-tie) without a problem. Basically, you just put it on your nipple and let your baby latch on using it.

That sounds like milk to me, or you are at least transitioning from colostrum to milk, that's a good sign!
