Yes, make sure that he has the same range of motion on both sides, I believe it's called torticollis where the neck muscles aren't equally loose and they tend to always turn their head to the same side.

Another thing that might help is taking him to a chiropractor to have some gentle massage/adjustments that would encourage him to use the other side.

I think most of the time the flat spots do correct themselves, but keep an eye on it and talk to your dr about it. I'd rather have my kid in a helmet for a few months than for it to not correct itself. Obviously that's a while down the road, though. He's still very young.
