I honestly think a birth plan is GREAT to do at the beginning of your pregnancy to go over with your care provider before you get too attached. THAT is the time when you can find out if you guys are a right fit for each other. Once you find a good place of birth and supportive care provider, I think there is minimal need for a birth plan. Every once in a while, I have a client break out a birth plan with Intown. But they pretty much don't do ANYTHING without discussing it with you thoroughly. And you'll have nurses come in and ask pretty much every shift about your plans. And they are VERY accustomed to people keeping placentas. They'll spend lots of time showing you your placenta and going over it with you to make sure it's in tact then they'll offer to put it on ice for you. Most other hospitals in the area, I recommend having a birth plan, especially if you are opting out of things that might be out of the ordinary.
