I recommend against declawing too.
Although if you do go through with it, only do the fronts.
Through training, and regular nail clipping most issues with kitties can be avoided.
Cats can be very very trainable, it just takes some time and constancy (which I do realize is difficult with kiddos and infants).
Try a spay bottle and use a command. NO bite or NO scratch can be learned.
