Most babies do sleep better on their bellies because their bodies are more stable that way, with no arms/legs flailing about to wake them up. I also thought it's fine to let DD belly sleep as long as I'm there but a friend told me the danger is not that they will suffocate (this wouldn't be SIDS anyways) but that sleeping on their bellies lets them get into such a deep sleep that the respiratory centre in the brain can shut off. Now I don't know about all this, sounds kind of fishy but that's just what I've been told. My mother keeps telling me even after 6 weeks to let DD sleep on her belly because back in the day she said all the babies slept like that and she never heard of any inexplicable deaths. I just don't know, this SIDS stuff is so confusing..
