I agree that kids pick up on things a lot earlier than you might think. I plan on talking to Eleanor about government in general and how there are lots of aspects of our lives that are influenced by the government as soon as she starts asking more involved questions about the world around her (which seems like it could be any day
). I am not too into politics, so I don't think we'll have a super tough time making it about the issues and not our opinions.
I was a nanny for 2 girls this past fall. After Obama won the election, they were so sad, and I asked the 8 year old why she wanted Romney to win, and she said she didn't like Obama because his wife made Cookie Monster eat vegetables and that was "just wrong." It was funny, but also really made me think about what kids see as important and how easily their opinions are shaped if no one talks to them about things like that.
