Is anemia genetic?

So, I had an appointment with someone at the health department. They basically provide an educational service, including general pregnancy information once every trimester. One of the office workers tests my iron level at each office visit and the supplements have always kept me at a good number. This time the woman mentioned that baby may be anemic because myself, my brother, my maternal aunt, and my maternal grandmother all have/had iron-deficient anemia.
Now I know that anemia is common in women post-menarche, and I know that some genetic diseases can cause anemia, but none of us have those diseases. To my knowledge iron-deficient anemia itself is not genetic. However, I am by no means knowledgeable medically. The fact that she isn't a nurse makes me hesitant to take this as valid medical information. Am I way off base, here? Does anyone know if it can be genetic?
Thanks so much Claire for my awesome siggy
