I'd love to do it if I could. In the village it isn't possible, but my grandparents basically lived that way especially when they were younger, as they got older they bought more and were less self sufficient.

They lived on the farm and only left it once a week. They had a couple of cows for milk, they grew a beef cow at a time, chickens for eggs and meat, a pig or two, and a few turkeys. Grandma grew a full acre for a garden and grew every vegetable that they would eat that year, including popcorn and spent weeks each year freezing and canning everything they could. They had a large cold storage room for all the root vegies too. They had a wood burning furnace and took the wood from the dead trees in the bush. Grandma used a wringer washer for all her laundry and hung everything on the line to dry outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter, she didn't own a dryer. It was definitely a simpler way of life.
