Ha I wish that little involvement was normal here! I never had my HCG levels checked, it really isn't necessary. Ultrasounds aren't necessary either. Nice to see/check on baby but not required. Midwives are highly trained. I can see how not knowing exactly how far along you are could be worrisome but the 12 week ultrasound, if you opt for it, can help pinpoint gestational age. Midwives can also estimate age by palpating.
As far as medications go, I suggest Micromedex. Good resource for what is safe during pregnancy and breast feeding.
